OBITUARY: Hannah TeWinkle Danforth, 1856-c1931, Mitchell Co., Iowa
Hannah TeWinkle Danforth
PIONEER MOTHER OF LITTLE CEDAR DIED THURSDAY EVENING
Mrs. W.B. Danforth, one of the most prominent women of the Little
Cedar vicinity, passed away at her home, just north of that town,
last Thursday evening, after but a brief illness.
Coming to Little Cedar before the railroad was built there, she has
had a part in the development of community life there during the
more important part of the community's history, and few women have
left the impress of their good works on the life of a neighborhood
to the extent that she did.
Of all that was good in the community life, she had an important
part; especially was this true of her younger, more active years.
Hannah TeWinkle was born October 22, 1856, at Lima, Sheboygan
County, Wisconsin. She came to Little Cedar, Iowa, fifty-one
years ago. Her parents, natives of Holland, came to this country
about 1850. Both parents died before she reached the age of 12 years.
She received a liberal education, preparing herself for teaching.
She started teaching school at 18 and taught six years. She was
then united in marriage to William Danforth; and with her husband
came to her present home near Little Cedar.
To this union were born six children: Harry G. Danforth, Little Cedar;
Mrs. Avis C. Hanson, of Tacoma, Washington; Frank Danforth (deceased);
Avery Danforth, of Steele, North Dakota; Dana Danforth (deceased); and
Florence Danforth, now teaching at Albion.
Mrs. Danforth was one of the little band of twelve that in 1887, forty-four
years ago, organized the Baptist Church at Little Cedar and for a great
many years took an active part in the Sunday School as teacher, being
assistant teacher of the senior class at the time of her death. She
will be long remembered for the active part she took in the spiritual
and social uplift of the community. She was ever ready to give help
in cases of sickness, and comfort in time of sorrow. Her death coming
last Thursday evening was a great shock, although her health had been
failing for the past few weeks, following an attack of the influenza
with complications. She leaves to mourn their loss besides her
immediate family, two brothers, Garret TeWinkle, of Rockford,
Washington, and Joseph TeWinkle, of Spokane, Washington; also one
sister, Mrs. Cenah Danforth, of Raymond, South Dakota.
Funeral services were conducted at the Little Cedar Baptist Church
Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock by Rev. John D. Kern, assisted by
Rev. Martin R. Davis, of Little Cedar, with interment in the Little
Cedar Cemetery.

OBITUARY: John Davies, 1846-1901, Mitchell County, Iowa
[Mitchell County Press October 10, 1901]
DAVIES
John Davies was born in Chester, England, July 31, 1846, and died at this
home in Osage, October 8, 1901. He was twice married, his first wife having
died about thirteen years ago. Four children were born to them. Only two
are living, a daughter, Mrs. Dot Conley of Cannon Falls, and his son
Llewllyn, who is a dentist, located at West Concord, Minnesota. The son
came and devotedly cared for his father during his last week of sickness.
Mrs. Conley and little daughter came, and thinking her father better,
returned home.
The eighth wedding anniversary of his marriage to his present wife, occurred
the seventh, the day before he died.
About a year ago, he sold their residence on Chase street and a week ago
last Monday the day he was taken sick, they moved into the rooms recently
occupied by Dr. Barrett, over the Pederson & Olson millinery store.
Mr. Davis came to Osage on the first train over the Illinois Central R.R.,
and ever since has been a blacksmith by trade. He had a wide circle of
friends who knew and respected him as "honest Jack Davies".
After a few days of terrible suffering, it was decided by a council of
doctors that the only chance for his life was an operation for strangulated
hernia in the left side, which took place a week ago Wednesday evening.
He stood the operation well and was hopeful, as were his physians. On
Friday morning he expressed himself as "the danger being past", but on
Tuesday morning there came a collapse, and as the night came on, he passed
out of his suffering to the great beyond.
At the post mortem examination it was found that the wound caused by the
operation was doing well but an internal ulcer about three inches long,
had perforated the large intestine near the liver, causing the collapse.
For the past six months at times he had complained of a terrible pain which
compelled him to leave his work and sit down for a few moments until it
passed.
As a business man, Mr. Davies was honest, upright and square with the world.
At one time he was a member of the city council.
He was a member of the Baptist church.
He was unable to talk much at the last but said to his pastor that he was
"ready."
The community has lost a good man and a good neighbor; the family a tender,
generous father and husband.
The funeral services will be held at the Baptist church this Thursday
afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, conducted by his pastor, Rev. D. I. Coon.
Dr. Conley and wife came Wednesday on the four o'clock to be present at
the funeral.
There seemed something almost strange or tragical about the death of all
his brothers and sisters and father, all of them dying unnatural or violent
deaths.

OBITUARY: Mr. J.A. Davis, c1836-1895, Mitchell County, Iowa
[ Osage News-May 30, 1895 ]
Davis, Mr. J. A.
A very sudden death occurred in the Third Ward Saturday night. A new comer,
Mr. J. A. Davis, with his wife and two children moved to Osage on the 7th of
May and rented a house for the purpose of making this their home, but death
came like a blighting frost and left a broken family. J. A. Davis was an
Englishman by birth and 58 years of age.
Since the age of 9 years he lived in this country. He was first married in
Madison Wisconsin in 1866 to Elizabeth Bromen. His second marriage occurred
at Maquoketa, Iowa, on the 1st of this month.
Mr Davis was quite sick the past week but he was a strong, vigorous man.
Saturday night he was taken with inflammation of the bowels and died Monday
night.
The remains were taken to Mazomania, Wisconsin, yesterday for burial. Brief
services were held at the house by Rev. E. J. Lockwood of the Methodist
church, and members of the A.O.U.W. of which he was a member acted as
pall bearers.
Mr. Davis left a young son and Mrs. Davis has one daughter. He had been a
traveling man for many years, but came here to open a marble shop as we are
informed. The blow is a sad one to the wife and children.
