   This cemetery is located on section 36, Newburg township, Mitchell county, Iowa and is about 3 miles south of St. Ansgar, Iowa. Many families buried in this cemetery were members of First Lutheran Church in St. Ansgar, Iowa.

   The name on the gate arch is Riverview, but the cemetery has also been called Halvorson cemetery and Pederson cemetery. The cemetery is located near the banks of the Cedar River on land owned by the Lohn family.

John also known as Hans Fredrik Shoger (Schoger/Schager/Shager/Schjager/Schiager). Born in Lands Prestegjeld, Christians Amt (now Oppland county), Norway on the farm Ovre Skiaker. Parents were Christian F. & Anne (Olsdatter Komperud) Shoger. His siblings were Olaus, Karen, Andrew and Julian. John raised his two younger brothers, Andrew & Julian, after their parents passed away. He was married to Ellen Ragnhild Knutson, daughter of Ingebrigt & Kari (Ivarsdatter) Knutson. They had five children - Cornelia Andrene, Cornelius Edward, Ella Augstina - Mrs. Syver Klemesrud, Henry Julius, and Anton Oscar. Gravestone reads: "He giveth in beloved sleep".

Oscar was also known as Anton Oscar Shoger. Died of rhuematic fever. Baptized and confirmed at Rock Creek Norwegian Lutheran Church. Parents were John F. & Ellen R. (Knutson) Shoger. Born in (West) Cedar township, on his father's farm on section 15. Gravestone reads: "Weep not Father and Mother for me, For I am waiting in Glory for Thee". "Sleep Brother dear and take your rest, God called you home, He thought it best".

 

Shoger, Henry J. Apr 24, 1880 Dec 30, 1906 26yrs; Henry was also known as Henry Julius Shoger.

 

Died of diabetes. He was baptized and confirmed at Rock Creek Norwegian Lutheran Church. His parents were John F. & Ellen R. (Knutson) Shoger. He was born in (West) Cedar township, on his father's farm on section 15. Gravestone reads "Dearest Henry, Thou hast left us, and Thy loss we deeply feel, But Tis God who bereft us, He shall all our Sorrows heal"

 

Shoger, Christian Frantsen Aug 2, 1804 d: Oct 30, 1866 62yrs; Father
Note: Christian was also known as C.F. Shoger (Schoger/Schager/Shager/Schjager/Schiager/Skiager/Skiaker). Born on farm Ovre Skiaker in Lands Prestegjeld, Christians Amt (now Oppland county), Norway. Baptized and confirmed in the Austinni parish near his home. He was married to Anne Olsdatter Komperud in 1838. Immigrated to America in 1850 with his wife, Anne and three children - Hans Fredrik, Olaus, and Karen Martea. They settled in Wisconsin farming in Wyoming township, Iowa county where two more children were born: Andrew and Julian. In 1863, Christian and some neighbors (Hover Hovelson and Erick Erickson) journeyed to South Dakota where they pre-empted land near Yankton. The following year, they sold their farms in Wisconsin and moved to their new homesteads in South Dakota. A year later (1865), they (Shoger, Hovelson, Erickson families) moved back east, settling in Rock township, Mitchell county, Iowa. They left South Dakota because of hardships caused by grasshoppers and Sioux Indian scares. Christian purchased the SE quarter of section 24 and Hover Hovelson bought the adjoining SW quarter of section 24. In 1865, Christian and Anne and their five unconfirmed children joined First Lutheran Church in St. Ansgar, Iowa. Christian's brothers - Christopher Frantsen, Hans Fredrik Frantsen and Ole Fransen, all immigrated to America and took the surname Shager. Christopher settled on a farm in Jefferson township, Allamakee county, Iowa (immigrated in 1854) and Hans Fredrik and Ole settled on a farm in Wiota township, Lafayette county, Wisconsin (immigrated in 1852). Hans Fredrik later moved to a farm near his brother Christopher in Jefferson township, Allamakee county, Iowa. Christian's only sister, Kjerstine Frantsdatter married Johannes Johannessen and they lived on the Ovre Skiaker farm in Norway were they both remained. They had several children who immigrated to America in 1866 whom took the surname spelling of Shauger.

 

Shoger, Anne Olsdatter May 1, 1821 Jan 9, 1870 50yrs; Mother;
Anne was also known as Anne Olsdatter Komperu She was born on the Komperud farm in Lands Prestigjeld, Christians Amt (now Oppland county), Norway. Her parents were Ole Askildsen & Karens Paulsdatter (Brurud) Komperud. Anne's parents and brother, Peder Olsen Komperud, came to America in 1857 and settled on a farm in Wiota township, Lafayette county, Wisconsin.

 

Shoger, Olavus Christiansen May 4, 1845 Jul 25, 1867 22yrs 2mos 21dys;
Olavus was also known as Olaus Christiansen Shoger (Oles Sjager/Shjager/Shager/Schjager). He was the son of Christian F. and Anne (Olsdatter) Shoger. Immigrated to America with his parents and siblings in 1850, settling in Iowa county, Wisconsin were he attended school. Settled near Yankton, South Dakota with his family in 1864 and settled in Rock township, Mitchell county, Iowa in 1865. He lived with his family on section 24, Rock township and helped his brother, John farm after their father, Christian died in 1866. He never married.

 

Shoger, Caroline M. Jun 4, 1849 Aug 23, 1872 23yrs 2mos;
Caroline was also known as Karen Martea Shoger (Schoger/Shager/Schager/Schjager). She was the daughter of Christian F. and Anne (Olsdatter) Shoger. Immigrated to America with parents & siblings in 1850, settling in Iowa county, Wisconsin were she attended school. She settled near Yankton, South Dakota with her family in 1864 and settled in Rock township, Mitchell county, Iowa in 1865. She lived with her family on section 24, Rock township and helped her brothers, John, Olaus with house & farm work and raising their younger brothers, Andrew and Julian, after their father and mother passed away. She never married.

 

Shoger, Cornelia Aug 15, 1872 May 15, 1873 9mos;
Cornelia Andrene daughter of John F. & Ellen R. (Knutson) Shoger. She was born on the Shoger farm, section 24, Rock township, Mitchell county, Iowa in the log cabin her grandfather, Christian F. Shoger, her father John F. Shoger, and her uncle Olaus Ch. Shoger built after her grandfather purchased the farm in 1865. It is not known why she died at such a young age. It is said that her grandfather, Ingebrigt Knutson, baptized her in the Norwegian Lutheran faith. He was not an ordained minister, but was a very religous man and is thought to have been a deacon at First Lutheran Church in St. Ansgar, Iowa.

Note: aka Ingebrigt Knutson. Born on the Vike farm, Evanger prestigjeld, Sondre Bergenhus, Hordaland county, Norway. Married Kari Ivarsdatter in 1844 and they had four sons: Knut Engebrigtsen, Iver Engebrigtsen, Nels Engebrigtsen, and Jacob Engebrigtsen while living in Norway. Immigrated to America in 1852 with their four sons, settling near Spring Prairie, Wisconsin (or Minnesota). They followed Rev. Claus Clausen to St. Ansgar, Iowa in 1854 settling on section 20, (East) Cedar township, Mitchell county. They were early settlers there and their daughter, Ellen Ragnhild Knutson, was born there in Dec 1854 in a covered wagon -- being the first white child born in Cedar township. Ellen later married John (Hans) F. Shoger and after John's death, she married to Ole Iverson Dahley. Engebrigt Knutson and his family joined First Lutheran Church in St. Ansgar, Iowa and were devout members. Around 1868, he purchased a large farm on section 1, Rock township, Mitchell county, Iowa where he and his wife lived out the remainder of their lives. Two of his sons, Knut and Iver spelled the last name Knutson and the younger two spelled it Knudson.

 

Knutson, Kari E. Dec 14, 1808 Mar 10, 1900 91yrs 4mos;
Mother; aka Karen Ivarsdatter. She was born on the Aure farm, Evanger prestigjeld, Sondre Bergenhus, Hordaland county, Norway. She married at a later age then most girls in those days and marrying a man 15 years younger than herself. Kari lived out her life on her husband's farm in Rock township which her son, Iver E., farmed until he moved to Osage in 1908.

 

Knutson, Knut E. Sept 27, 1845 Nov 26, 1911  
Note: Knut Engebrigtsen was born on the Vike farm, Evanger presigjeld, Sondre Bergenhus, Hordaland county, Norway to Engebrigt Knutson & Kari Ivarsdatter (Aure) Vike. He immigrated to America in 1852 with his parents and three brothers, settling near Spring Prairie and later settling in Cedar township, Mitchell county, in 1854. He married Anna Iversdatter Dahle, daughter of Iver Nielsen & Elisabet Olsdatter (Seim) Dahle. Anna was a sister to Ole Iverson Dahley whom married Ellen R. (Knutson) Shoger. Knut & Anna purchased a 320 acre farm, section 15 (N 1/2), (West) Cedar township, Mitchell county, Iowa. They had three daughters - Clara - Mrs. Albert Nelson; Ida - Mrs. Robert Lofgren; and Elizabeth - Mrs. Ole Hylden. Misfortune took Knut and he was unable to make payments on his farm, so his brother-in-law, John F. Shoger, purchased the farm from him (selling the parental Shoger farm in Rock township). John, in turn, purchased an 80 acre farm in Lincoln township, Worth county, Iowa near Manly, for Knut and his family. Sometime between 1880 - 1885, Knut left his family in Iowa and journeyed to California where he became an oyster fisherman. He must have had some luck as there were several pearls sold at his niece - Charlotte Knutson's auction. While he was in California, his wife, Anna, and daughters moved back to Cedar township where they lived with Anna's parents, Iver and Elisabet Dahle whom were living on section 16, (West) Cedar township, Mitchell county, Iowa. It is said, they also lived in a smaller house located on the John F. Shoger farm (across the road - section 15). Knut was gone for over 20 years, but was living in Charles City, Iowa in 1910. His wife, Anna, by then was living in Osage, Iowa taking care of an older lady. Knut died in a hospital in either Albert Lea or Rochester, Minnesota. Anna moved to Williston, North Dakota and lived with her daughters, Ida and Elizabeth. Anna is buried in Williston, North Dakota. Clara was the only daughter to remain in Iowa, living on a farm near Rudd, Iowa.

 

Knutson, Iver E. Aug 11, 1847 Dec 8, 1933 86yrs, 4 mos;
Iver Engebrigtsen was born on the Vike farm, Evanger Presigjeld, Sondre Bergenhus, Hordaland county, Norway to Engebrigt Knutson & Kari Ivarsdatter. (Aure) Vike. Immigrated to America in 1852 with parents & 3 brothers, settling near Spring Prairie and later settling in Cedar township, Mitchell county in 1854. He married Anna Johansdatter Seim, daughter of Johan & Ingeborg Seim of Decorah, Iowa. Anna was a first cousin to Ole Iverson Dahley whom married Ellen R. (Knutson) Shoger. Iver & Anna purchased the 200 acre parental Knutson farm located on section 1, Rock Twp, Mitchell county. Had 1 daughter: Charlotte "Lottie" Knutson. Iver and Anna moved into Osage, Iowa in 1908.

Knutson, Charlotte I. Sept 9, 1894 Aug 7, 1969 Daughter of Iver Anna (Seim) Knutson.
Grew up on Knutson family farm, sect. 1, Rock twp, Mitchell county. In 1908 she moved to Osage with parents and continued to spend the rest of her life in Osage. Worked for Mitchell County Memorial Hospital for many years. Lottie never married.

Born on the Ovre Noss farm, Biridalen, Christians Amt (now Oppland county), Norway to Nils Ovensen & Maren Larsdatter. Mathias married Johanne Gulbrandsen Bakkum in 1866 in Biridalen, Norway. They were the parents of six children. Mathias and Johanne immigrated to America in 1877 with their three children and settled on a farm (section 11), Rock township, Mitchell county, Iowa. Mathias died on his farm.

Johanna was the daughter of Gulbrand Jensen & Anna (Pedersdatter) Bakkum. She was born on the Ruud farm, Biridalen, Christians Amt (now Oppland county), Norway. She was married in 1866 to Mathias Nilsen. They were the parents of six children - Nettie - Mrs. Pedro J. Pederson; Emil Gustav; Anne Marie (Mary) - Mrs. James Cameron/Mrs. Gilbert J. Dammen; Anton; Annie - Mrs. Jacob Fawver; and Minnie - Mrs. William S. Seaver, son of Colbjorn Seaver. Johanna died at the home of William S. Seaver in St. Ansgar, Iowa. Johanna was the sister of Ingeborg - Mrs. Jens Johnson, Rock township, Mitchell county, Iowa and Agnette - Mrs. Anton Johnson of Deer Creek township, Worth county, Iowa. Jens and Anton Johnson were brothers.
