Note: Christian was also known as C.F. Shoger (Schoger/Schager/Shager/Schjager/Schiager/Skiager/Skiaker). Born on farm Ovre Skiaker in Lands Prestegjeld, Christians Amt (now Oppland county), Norway. Baptized and confirmed in the Austinni parish near his home. He was married to Anne Olsdatter Komperud in 1838. Immigrated to America in 1850 with his wife, Anne and three children - Hans Fredrik, Olaus, and Karen Martea. They settled in Wisconsin farming in Wyoming township, Iowa county where two more children were born: Andrew and Julian. In 1863, Christian and some neighbors (Hover Hovelson and Erick Erickson) journeyed to South Dakota where they pre-empted land near Yankton. The following year, they sold their farms in Wisconsin and moved to their new homesteads in South Dakota. A year later (1865), they (Shoger, Hovelson, Erickson families) moved back east, settling in Rock township, Mitchell county, Iowa. They left
South Dakota because of hardships caused by grasshoppers and Sioux Indian scares.
Christian purchased the SE quarter of section 24 and Hover Hovelson bought the adjoining SW quarter of section 24. In 1865, Christian and Anne and their five unconfirmed children joined First Lutheran Church in St. Ansgar, Iowa. Christian's brothers - Christopher Frantsen, Hans Fredrik Frantsen and Ole Fransen, all immigrated to America and took the surname Shager. Christopher settled on a farm in Jefferson township, Allamakee county, Iowa (immigrated in 1854) and Hans Fredrik and Ole settled on a farm in Wiota township, Lafayette county, Wisconsin (immigrated in 1852). Hans Fredrik later moved to a farm near his brother Christopher in Jefferson township, Allamakee county, Iowa. Christian's only sister, Kjerstine Frantsdatter married Johannes Johannessen and they lived on the Ovre Skiaker farm in Norway were they both remained. They had several children who immigrated to America in 1866 whom took the surname spelling of Shauger.

Cornelia Andrene daughter of John F. & Ellen R. (Knutson) Shoger. She was born on the Shoger farm, section 24, Rock township, Mitchell county, Iowa in the log cabin her grandfather, Christian F. Shoger, her father John F. Shoger, and her uncle Olaus Ch. Shoger built after her grandfather purchased the farm in 1865. It is not known why she died at such a young age. It is said that her grandfather, Ingebrigt Knutson, baptized her in the Norwegian Lutheran faith. He was not an ordained minister, but was a very religous man and is thought to have been a deacon at First Lutheran Church in St. Ansgar, Iowa. |

Married Kari Ivarsdatter in 1844 and they had four sons: Knut Engebrigtsen, Iver Engebrigtsen, Nels Engebrigtsen, and Jacob Engebrigtsen while living in Norway. Immigrated to America in 1852 with their four sons, settling near Spring Prairie, Wisconsin (or Minnesota). They followed Rev. Claus Clausen to St. Ansgar, Iowa in 1854 settling on section 20, (East) Cedar township, Mitchell county. They were early settlers there and their daughter, Ellen Ragnhild Knutson, was born there in Dec 1854 in a covered wagon -- being the first white child born in Cedar township. Ellen later married John (Hans) F. Shoger and after John's death, she married to Ole Iverson Dahley. Engebrigt Knutson and his family joined First Lutheran Church in St. Ansgar, Iowa and were devout members.
Around 1868, he purchased a large farm on section 1, Rock township, Mitchell county, Iowa where he and his wife lived out the remainder of their lives. Two of his sons, Knut and Iver spelled the last name Knutson and the younger two spelled it Knudson.

Note: Knut Engebrigtsen was born on the Vike farm, Evanger presigjeld, Sondre Bergenhus, Hordaland county, Norway to Engebrigt Knutson & Kari Ivarsdatter (Aure) Vike. He immigrated to America in 1852 with his parents and three brothers, settling near Spring Prairie and later settling in Cedar township, Mitchell county, in 1854. He married Anna Iversdatter Dahle, daughter of Iver Nielsen & Elisabet Olsdatter (Seim) Dahle. Anna was a sister to Ole Iverson Dahley whom married Ellen R. (Knutson) Shoger. Knut & Anna purchased a 320 acre farm, section 15 (N 1/2), (West) Cedar township, Mitchell county, Iowa. They had three daughters - Clara - Mrs. Albert Nelson; Ida - Mrs. Robert Lofgren; and Elizabeth - Mrs. Ole Hylden. Misfortune took Knut and he was unable to make payments on his farm, so his brother-in-law, John F. Shoger, purchased the farm from him (selling the parental Shoger farm in Rock township). John, in turn, purchased an 80 acre farm in Lincoln township,
Worth county, Iowa near Manly, for Knut and his family. Sometime between 1880 - 1885, Knut left his family in Iowa and journeyed to California where he became an oyster fisherman. He must have had some luck as there were several pearls sold at his niece - Charlotte Knutson's auction. While he was in California, his wife, Anna, and daughters moved back to Cedar township where they lived with Anna's parents, Iver and Elisabet Dahle whom were living on section 16, (West) Cedar township, Mitchell county, Iowa. It is said, they also lived in a smaller house located on the John F. Shoger farm (across the road - section 15). Knut was gone for over 20 years, but was living in Charles City, Iowa in 1910. His wife, Anna, by then was living in Osage, Iowa taking care of an older lady. Knut died in a hospital in either Albert Lea or Rochester, Minnesota. Anna moved to Williston, North Dakota and lived with her daughters, Ida and Elizabeth. Anna is buried in
Williston, North Dakota. Clara was the only daughter to remain in Iowa, living on a farm near Rudd, Iowa.
