Anthony Rolfe Carter, Jr. was born on September 14, 1838 at Methwold, Norfolk county, England. His parents were Anthony and Emma (Bowen) Carter, Sr. Anthony had two older brothers, Nathaniel Carter and James Carter, and three younger brothers, Joseph R. Carter, Philip B. Carter and George H. Carter and one younger sister, Sarah Carter.

Anthony Rolfe Carter was baptized on September 26, 1838, in private, at Methwold, Norfolk county, England. He grew up in the Methwold and Babbingly, Norfolk county areas. His father was a farmer and sheep herder and at

Babblingly, his father was a baliff (head foreman). Anthony R. learned farming and livestock as his trade.

On November 15, 1851, Anthony R. Carter, Jr. arrived in New York on the ship called Lenobia, with his parents, Anthony and Emma Carter, and his siblings, Nathaniel, James, Joseph R., Sarah, and Philip B. Carter. His uncle, Joseph Carter and his family were also on this ship.

Anthony R. settled first in Rutland township, Dane county, Wisconsin with his parents and siblings. In 1855, he moved to Mitchell county, Iowa where his father purchased a farm on sections 20 and 21 of Cedar township.

On April 23, 1862, Anthony R. Carter, Jr. was united in marriage to Miss Ann Thompson at Osage, Mitchell county, Iowa.

Anna Thompson was born on February 12, 1831 in Christiania, Norway. Christiania is now known as Oslo. She came to America with an uncle and aunt in 1849 and settled with them in Decorah, Winneshiek county, Iowa. In 1851, Ann moved to Mitchell county, where she lived in Rock township and worked as a house servant. In 1859, she gave birth to a baby girl whom she named Josephine Louise Thompson. Anthony R. Carter, Jr. adopted Josephine and she became known as Josephine Louise Carter (and as Josie Carter). She later married William Seymour Carter.

Anthony R. and Ann began their married life on an 80 acre farm on section 31 in Cedar township, Mitchell county, Iowa. This farm was located 3 miles west and two miles south of Osage. While living on this farm, Anthony R.

hauled cream from the area farms to the local creamery. Anthony R. and Ann

In 1883, Anthony R. and Ann Carter joined the Evangelical Methodist church

became the parents of three more children, namely: George Anthony Carter, Sarah Jane Carter (married Alfred Seymour Carter), and Rolph A. Carter (whom died in infancy and is buried at Tucker cemetery south of Osage, Iowa). at the Kildee School in Cedar township with their daughter, Sarah, and her husband, Alfred S. Carter. The officiating minister was William Manning Carter, father of Alfred Carter.

In 1886, Anthony R. and Ann moved to his parent’s farm on sections 20 and 21 of Cedar township. In 1893, Anthony R. Carter, Jr. became the owner of his father’s farm according to his father’s last will and testament. In 1897, shortly after he lost his sight, Anthony R. and Ann moved into a house on Pleasant Street in Osage, Iowa where they lived out their lives. Anthony R. died on April 12, 1914 and Ann died on September 28, 1914. They are both buried at the Osage cemetery in Osage, Iowa.
