EXPLANATIONS
Delayed birth records are birth certificates filed many years after the event by the people who did not have an original birth certificate on record. Affidavits were sworn to by relatives or family doctors who were present when the birth occurred, or proof from baptismal records or family Bibles were used to document the birth.
In 1940 everyone who didn't have a birth certificate, suddenly needed one to obtain a Social Security card. All people who were not previously recorded filed their birth with the County Clerk. Some of those people were born as early as 1858. If a person was born prior to 1880 in Iowa, and was still alive in 1940, it is possible that a birth record exists. Births after 1925 have been omitted.
