Mills County, Iowa

Schools & Institutions

Early Rural Schools

Early rural schools were usually situated within no more than a two-mile walking distance for students. Most schools were on at least an acre of ground.

Teacher certification was by examination and was based on the subject scores. Teachers with first grade certificates received the highest scores and often were paid a higher salary than the second grade certificate teachers; these were followed by the third grade certificates. Teaching tenure varied from a few months to many years.

The earliest reference regarding the development of education in Mills County is from the Opinion Tribune, Glenwood, Iowa, October 24, 1946, p. 5.
