Opinion Tribune
April 11, 1946
A reunion of five consecutive generations in one family, an event of interest to anyone, and of special interest to Pacific Junction and Glenwood people, took place in Seneca, Kansas last week when Mrs. George F. Root of Seneca played hostess to her "children".
Present at the gathering were Mrs. Root, age 98; her daughter, Mrs. John Hampton of Seneca, age 75; her grand daughter, Mrs. Robert McIntire, Sr. of Pacific Junction, age 54; her great-grandson, Robert McIntire, Jr., age 30; and her great granddaughter, Rosaline McIntire, age 6.
Commenting on her long life, Mrs. Root attributed her long life to hard work and regular eating.
Mrs. Root's maiden name was Emma Ensign and she is of French descent. She was born in New York City in 1847 and came to Atchinson, Kansas when she was nine years old. Her family lived there for a few months and then moved to Centralia, Kansas. In later years they moved to Seneca where she has lived since. Her father was a dealer in thorough-bred horses.
To her marriage was born six children of whom three are still living.
Mrs. Root tells some interesting stories of the early days. One of them is of the Indians coming across the plains raiding their farm. When this happened she would take her six children and run for the timber and hide until the Indians were gone. The Indians were very fond of stealing white children and raising them as their own.
Another story is of the grasshoppers coming and destroying all of their crops. Not satisfied with the crops, the grasshoppers even ate all of the leather harness. About the only food left was black walnuts.
Mrs. Root still does her own house work and her memory is excellent. She will be 99 years old on November 9.
Mrs. John Hampton, her daughter, new 75, attributes her long life also to hard work and proper eating. Mrs. Hampton had three children, two of whom are still living.
Mrs. Robert McIntire, daughter of Mrs. Hampton, is 54 years old and has been a resident of Pacific Junction for the past 20 years. Mrs. McIntire was the mother of two children of whom only Robert is now living. He lived in Pacific Junction for his first 24 years.
Rosaline McIntire, the six-year-old daughter of Robert McIntire has a total of eight grandparents. Her two grandfathers are Harold Bates of Bellevue, Neb. and Robert McIntire, Sen. of Pacific Junction. Her two grandmothers are Mrs. Robert McIntire Sen. and Mrs. Harold Gates.
Three great grandmothers are Mrs. J. Gates, Mrs. John Hampton and Mrs. Gerhinger, who is 90 years old. And, of course, she has her great grandmother, Mrs. George Root.
