OVER 125 AT THE LINCOLN FAMILY REUNION SUNDAY
Glenwood Opinion Tribune
August 19, 1929
Relatives from Four States Enjoy Day Together at Bethlehem School Southwest of Junction
Family Came From England:
Abraham Lincoln, "The Great Emancipator Was a Member of this Family Which Came Here from England in the Year of 1635.
One hundred and twenty-five persons coming from four states assembled for the annual Lincoln family reunion Sunday at the Bethlehem school house. The day was ideal for such a gathering and the large shady yard made an ideal place in which to assemble. While the older folks visited the youngsters enjoyed the play ground apparatus. The sumptuous picnic dinner was enjoyed at noon after which an interesting program was given. This was presided over by the President Mrs. L.L. Cowardin and consisted of the following:
Music, Orchestra
Welcome, Sarah Jane Lincoln
Reading, "Willie and his Ma," Ellen Lincoln
Lincoln Genealogy by the Historian, Mrs. Wesley Bourn
Music, Orchestra
Reading, "Auto Trouble," Hubert Cowardin
Remarks by the President, Mrs. Lydia Cowardin.
The orchestra which furnished the delightful music for the occasion consisted of Lawrence, Leverne, Wayne and Shirley Lincoln, Lyle Abshire; Gretchen Haney, Glade Haney and Mrs. S.C. Lincoln. At the election of officers which followed Mrs. L.L. Cowardin was re-elected president and Mrs. Wesley Bourn was re-elected historian.
This is one of America's historic families an any one might well be proud to be a member as it has burnished some of the important leaders of national life since the Revolutionary days, the most outstanding member Abraham Lincoln. "The Great Emancipator."
The Lincoln's came from Lincolnshire England, there were eight of them came to America between the years 1635 and 1645, and three of these were brothers, Daniel, Thomas, and Samuel. The Daniel and Thomas mentioned died without heirs, but Samuel was one of the original settlers of Windham, Conn., he married Elizabeth Jacob of Norwich, Conn., June 2, 1692.
It is from the family of Samuel Lincoln mentioned above that Abraham Lincoln later came and through which the Lincoln families of this community trace their lineage. From the Genealogy of the family read by the historian at the reunion this year it was noted that Benj. Lincoln, the highly respected venerable resident of west of Pacific Junction and who was present at this year's reunion is but six generations removed from the first Samuel Lincoln who arrived in this country in 1635. Albert Lincoln, the father of Ben Lincoln, was born in Carbondale, Pa., and came to Ohio at the age of 19 was a school teacher afterward taking up farming. His family was born and reared in Ohio. He came to Iowa in 1880 buying a farm where he lived until his death in 189. His eldest son Benj. and one or two other brothers came to Pacific Junction in 1877. They rented land at first, afterwards all buying land surrounding their father's farm. This part of the country at that time included a great deal of pasture land or prairie as it was called. Land was lower in price than at the present time.
A fact worthy of notice is that Albert Lincoln married Elizabeth O'Neill. He had a brother, Edward Henry who married a cousin of Mrs. Albert Lincoln, Phoebe O'Neill. He and his wife came to Iowa and located near Pacific Junction in 1857, just twenty years before his brother Albert Lincoln located in this community. Thus it is seen that the Lincoln families and the O'Neill families, both well known family names in this community today became closely linked together by intermarriage many years ago. It is also a noteworthy fact that there is still one sister of Albert and Edward Lincoln who is living. This is Mrs. Marcia M. Cable of Hudson, S.D., who is she lives until August 29 of this year will be 95.
Martha Carter, a sister of Ben Lincoln was the eldest member of the family present at the reunion this year. She is 82. The youngest member was little Miss Annabelle, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dwight Lincoln who was not quite eight months old.
Those present at the reunion this year were as follows: Lydia Chalmers, Edith, Jackie, Dwight, Geneva and Hubert Cowardin; Benj., Margaret, Harry, Emma, Herbert, Bertha, Pauline, Lafe, Georgia, Margaret, Helen, Esther, Raymond, Earl, Vera, Laura, Sylvia, Shirley, Merrill, Hilka, Ruthie, Ernest, Carl, Minnie, Ellen, Ethyl, Dale, Elmer, Estella, Dorothy, Ray, May, Lawrence, Rose, Dean, Dwight, Oma, Sarah, Dwight, Luetta, Anabelle, Charles, Estella Shirley, Rosa, Leverne, and Shirley Jr. Lincoln; Chris Aleander and Ethel Christiansen; Leora, Charles and Betty Coffey, Woodrow Cheyney; Mr. and Mrs. Joe O'Neill, Ira Franklin and Wesley W.
