GLENWOOD PEOPLE ATTEND PICNIC IN CALIFORNIA
"Glenwood Opinion Tribune"
March 12, 1934
N.T. Bradway, Former Glenwood Newspaper Man, Gives Interesting Report of Iowa Picnic and Gatherings of Glenwood People

N.T. Bradway, well known former Glenwood newspaper man now interested in the newspaper business in Alhambra, Cal., writes the Opinion-Tribune giving a report of the Glenwood people who attended the Iowa picnic, and says "At the urgent request of several of the former Glenwood people I am sending the following. It is a job that I like, for that matter. I have a warm spot for the consolidated paper Opinion-Tribune. I served six years learning the trade on the old Opinion when it was located in the little brick building, now a residence, just east of the Congregational Church.

Then in 1891 with N.C. Fields I helped establish the Mills County Tribune. I note the Opinion will soon be 70 years old and my wish is that it may flourish for another 70 years. I am just a month older than the Opinion, but as I was born on Feb. 29, 1864, my birthdays have not been as numerous as others much longer."

Two events have just taken place here that interest Mills county readers, the big Iowa State picnic on March 3, and a meeting of old time Glenwood people on March 4. Papers say there were 75,000 people at the Iowa picnic, five times as many people as those living in Mills county. It was held in Lincoln park and registers were located in each of the 99 counties, the grounds being laid out like the map of Iowa.

The size of the picnic crowd could be visualized by the vast number of automobiles parked on all sides of the park and extending several blocks in all directions. We heard one Mills county woman say she had to park her car 10 blocks away.

About 125 people registered from Mills county. As this is one of the smallest counties in Iowa it can be seen that this gathering of Hawkeyes (coming as they did from all parts of southern California) was no small affair.

Reception at Park:

However, the gathering in the afternoon of the following day which was Sunday at West Lake Park, Los Angeles, in honor of a half dozen people visiting for a short time here from Glenwood was of particular interest to Glenwood people. There were Joseph Ewing and daughter, Mrs. Elsa Jones, Mr. and Mrs. Jack Bussamas, and Dr. and Mrs. James M. Donelan, the latter couple were not present as they had been called back to their Glenwood home two days before by pressing business. The Donelans had been here for two months visiting with their son and daughter and to see for the first time their grandson, James IV, now about six months old.

The reception was hurriedly arranged for but the attendance was surprisingly large, about forty being present. A fine lunch was served at one o'clock and the afternoon was spent in "reminiscing". It was an out door affair, a warm sun making it an ideal day. Jack is a newcomer to Glenwood so the main reminiscing had to do with Joe, who came to Glenwood in 1879, 55 years ago; was for a time in the book store as a member of the firm of Record & Ewing; later it was Ewing & Robinson; later Joe sold his interest to Scott Robinson who is still doing business at the old stand. Joe was for 30 years deputy post master, retiring four years ago.

Those present were: Mr. and Mrs. James Sawyers, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Dull, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Zimmer, Mr. and Mrs. Nelson Hobson, Dr. and Mrs. Lyon, Ola Doughty Hale and husband, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Van Orsdel, Grace Reasoner Melton and husband, Mrs. Wickham DeWitt, Mrs. Dr. Craig, the Misses Miller, Katherine Jackson, Neva Russell, Oscar Dyar, William Lamb, Harold Workman, all of Los Angeles; Mrs. Dave Jamison, San Diego; Mr. and Mrs. John Kelley, Long Beach; Mrs. Emma Deupree Myers and daughter` Lankershim; Mrs. Pet Carter Mickelwait, Riverside; Mrs. Harry and Miss Ruth Stewart, Orange; Mrs. Nina Dalton Pettigrew and daughter, Mrs. Green and husband, South Pasadena; Mrs. Mary B. Chambers, Alhambra.
