Former Pupils and Teachers Return for Celebration Sunday
Former pupils and teachers of the Elm Grove school in Lyons township numbering in the hundreds returned Sunday to the scene of their school days to attend the
homecoming celebration which had been arranged by the Parent-Teachers association of that district, many returning to the old home community for the first time in 25 years and more.
A basket dinner was served at the noon hour, complete in every detail.
The program began at 10:30 a.m. with Mrs. W.S. Bradley presiding and Rev. Durkee gave the welcome address. Music was furnished by a trio, Mrs. Aubry Garrett, Mrs. Will Maxwell and
Virginia Garrett and Mae Murphy gave a reading followed by several songs by a group of girls.
The dinner came next and tables had been arranged for this in a grove across the road from the school house. The afternoon program began at 2:30 and this was held in the school house
which could not near accommodate the number attending. The program included music by the Rodman twins, a history of the school since the first building was erected in 1857 by Harvey
Dean and Mrs. H.C. Warren. More music and talks followed and letters were read from former teachers, and former teachers who were present were called on, with 12 responding.
The oldest former pupil present was Harvey Dean and the former pupil coming the longest distance was Mrs. Stella Lambert, Maryville, Mo.
