EIGHTY-FIFTH BIRTHDAY OF TABOR CHURCH OBSERVED
Malvern Leader
October 21, 1937
The Tabor Congregational church celebrated its 85th anniversary Sunday, Oct. 17, at an all day meeting where visiting delegations from the Congregational churches of Farragut,
Randolph, Percival, Glenwood and Villisca were present in addition to many people of different denominations.
Addresses at the morning worship service were given by the superintendent of the Iowa Congregational churches, Mr. Johnson, of Grinnell, and by Rev. Fischer of Cleveland,
O., who was pastor of the Tabor church from 1910 to 1916.
Featured on the afternoon program was a pageant presented by descendants of the founders of the church and college in Tabor who portrayed their ancestors. The pageant was written
by Ellen Gaston Hurlbutt, granddaughter of Geo. B. Gaston, one of the founders of the church and college.
A Pilgrim fellowship meeting was held late in the afternoon with Dr. E.J. Montgomery of Grinnell presiding. Dr. Montgomery is the religious education director for the Iowa Congregational churches.
Descendants of Father Todd, the first pastor of the Tabor church, composed in sextet arrangement, provided special music during the day.
Among those present at the reunion were Mrs. Alice Cummings Galt and Miss Alice Murphy who are especially deserving of mention, as both are missionaries in North China and went into
the missionary field from the Tabor Congregational church.
