A BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE MILLS COUNTY HISTORICAL MUSEUM:

The Mills County Historical Museum is owned and operated by a group of citizens called the Mills County Historical Society. This is a not for profit organization and it is not supported in any way by any governmental unit. There are no employees and it is maintained solely by volunteers.
The Museum opened in 1959 with additions made at various times. The complex now contains the main building with two floors, barn with three floors, small community jail, outhouse, country school, machinery hall and Burlington Northern Caboose.
The Country School — West Liberty No. 2 was moved in from the country in 1963.
The Machinery Hall, housing cars, trucks, tractors, household items and many other items was constructed in 1967. It doubled in size in 2004.
The Paul Rowe Room was finished in the main building to house the collection purchased from his family in 1977. This now has a large collection of Indian artifacts donated by other Mills County residents.
The Hamann Cottage was completed in the main building in 1983 to show the furniture from her family the Detlef-Fischer Family. The donations were made by Katie Hamann and her sisters.
The Burlington Caboose was added to the Museum complex in 1987.
The Coddington Barn was reconstructed on the Museum site in 1988. This contains much early farm equipment as well as a life-sized hand carved mule.
The Henderson Jail was reconstructed on the Museum site with funds donated by the Otha Wearin Family.
The Thomas Addition was added in 1994 with two floors. It houses the military room and second office on the first floor, Music Room and the Ruth Craig Cottage on the second floor.
Paving the parking was done in 2001 by the Museum, Amphitheater, and Glenwood Lake Park. A paved patio was added in front of the main building in 2002.
The Museum is open to everyone including handicapped. Schools are encouraged to arrange tours for their spring outings. The history of the Museum is very educational.
The amount requested from the Mills County Endowment Fund is $449.00. This request is not listed separately in our budget but included in the request for new equipment.
The Museum funds are held and controlled by Glenwood State Bank. Our funds are audited annually with the bank funds but there is no special report for the Museum.
