Daniel and Sirena Lewis


Daniel Johnson Lewis Jr., born May 10, 1842 in Franklin Township, Iowa and his wife Sirena Jane Speer, born July 17,1849 in Rochester Township, Missouri.

Sirena was the daughter of Charles Speer and Elizabeth Ingram Speer. Sirena's family moved to Mills County in 1852. Daniel and Sirena lived near his parents in Mills County where they had five children, four girls and one boy.

Nellie Agnes Lewis

Nellie Agnes Lewis, born Oct. 25, 1869 in Nodaway County, Missouri. She was the daughter of Daniel and Sirena Lewis.

She spent her childhood on her parents farm in Mills County. After her marriage to Cassin B. Montgomery, she moved to Nebraska. Cassin and Nellie were the parents of three daughters and two sons. Nellie died in 1936 and is buried with Cassin in the Schuyler Cemetery in Colfax County, Nebraska.

Emma Grant Lewis

Emma Grant Lewis, born Nov. 22, 1875 in Mills County, Iowa. Emma was the third daughter of Daniel and Sirena Lewis. Their second daughter died in infancy. She was given the middle name of Grant because her father wanted a boy he could name after Ulysses S. Grant.

Emma married, Ivan Coulter, a nephew of Joshua Durbin. Ivan came to Mills County to work with his Uncle and met Emma. They were married in Malvern in January 1896. They were the parents of eleven children. Ivan and Emma moved to Missouri in 1915. Ivan died in 1950 and Emma died November 19, 1969. They are buried in the Dunnegan Grove Cemetery in Vernon County, Missouri.

Gladys Lewis

Gladys Grace Lewis, born Oct., 1891 in Mills County. She was the daughter of Daniel J. Lewis Jr. and Sirena J. Speer Lewis. Gladys married Harry Albert Wilson about 1913. They were the parents of one daughter and one son. Gladys died December 24, 1970 and she is buried with her husband in the Kimball Cemetery in Kimball, Nebraska.

Lewis and Coulter Young Women

Nellie Lewis Montgomery in the back, Gladys Lewis Wilson seated, and the young girl on the arm of the chair is my grandmother, Faye Marie Coulter. When her parents moved, to Missouri, Faye stayed in Nebraska with her grandparents Daniel and Sirena Lewis.

Ivan and Emma (Lewis) Coulter

Ivan and Emma (Lewis) Coulter with their two oldest daughters, Faye Marie Coulter, and Gayle Gee Coulter (infant). This picture was taken in Mills County before they moved to Nebraska.
