MINEOLA QUASQUICENTENNIAL "125 YEARS" It was a beautiful day for Mineola's celebration, Saturday, September 3, 2005. Festivities began at 9:00. The Rural School Reunion was held at the Community Center, and was full of tables with memorabilia, and people were visiting old school friends. I talked with several people, (representing the Mills County Website), and they posed for pictures with the school table they attended. Some items were for sale, including a video of "Mineola". The quilt (old and new) and vintage hat display was held at St. John Lutheran Church. It was beautiful to see as the pews were filled with quilts, with the stained glass windows making it quite a site to see.. A flea market was held at the north parking lot of the church. Horseshoes were held throughout the day, and food stands along the street. The parade started at 2 p.m. with the reading of the Proclamation from the Governor of Iowa, songs by the church choir and blowing of the fire whistle. Antique cars and tractors were set up, as well as the Show and Shine Car Show. Bingo was held at the Fire Station, and for children, there were games, face painting, a dunk tank, cotton candy, snow cones and more. The Polka Dudes performed in the Community Center dance hall from 3 to 6 pm. At 5 p.m. Clay and Suzette Deitchler served a barbeque serving buffet-style To end the activities for the day, music was provided by the Bristol's, and beer garden. Many thanks to Gary Schoening, and all of the many great volunteers for making the centennial a very successful day. |
