World War II+ Newspaper Clippings

Letter from Wilma Fuchs
May 16, 1999

This is a scrapbook that I started in my teen years in Glenwood. I offer it to the Glenwood library as a gift, in the hope that visitors there will find interest in its contents. The scrapbook concerns Glenwood people and events during the WWII era plus a few years in each direction. I grew up in Glenwood and moved to California in 1942.

My favorite newspaper was the Glenwood Opinion Tribune, even after my move. My uncle, Les Hoobler, worked for the Opinion Tribune for many years, when Hazel Chote and the brothers owned the paper. I have vivid memories of "helping" my uncle set type. He would ask me to inspect the type for print lice. In the process, I seemed always to get water squirted in my face. I never learned.

The name I started out with was Wilma (Billie) Williams. Walt and Kate Williams were my father and mother. My eldest sister was Lucille Martindale. My other sister was Leona Gregg. All of these relatives are gone now and I miss them. My present name is Wilma Fuchs. I am still married to Frank, the sailor I met 53 years ago, in California.

Anyone who reads this letter or the scrapbook and wishes to exchange memories of Glenwood in bygone days may contact me at: (Address removed as Wilma Fuchs passed away in 2010).
