Mills County, Iowa

Military, WWII Casualty List, Mills, Iowa

Glenwood Opinion Tribune
February, 1946

The Mills County World War II casualty list, as recorded by the Iowa State Department of History and Archives was received Tuesday by the Glenwood Opinion-Tribune. Application for the list was made last week.

Regarding the record, Bessie B. Wilson, head of the records division, stated that it is believed that the list is one of the most complete in any state. However, no official list has been received from the war department as yet. She added that any additions or corrections will be gratefully received.

Total casualties of Iowa's known dead as of February 15, 1946 is 7,268. Seventy-one names have been added since January 1, 1946. Most of these 71 have previously been reported missing in action, with accidental deaths accounting for the remainder.

The war records division head went on to state that one difficulty often experienced is that more than one county claims the same casualty. The policy of the war department is to list the name as belonging to the county and state given as the permanent address of the next of kin. Policy of the state historical department until a complete record is sent them by the next of kin. Records are always connected to comply with the wishes of the nearest relative.

Tribute was paid Mrs. Ann Renschler, representing the Glenwood American Legion Auxiliary, who has greatly aided the state organization in compiling their list of Mills County dead. Complete address of the state organization is as follows for those who desire to correspond: Iowa State Department of History and Archives, Historical Building 19, Des Moines, Iowa.
