Company I arrived home about 6 p.m. Monday on a special train which brought them from Des Moines where they had been in National Guard encampment
at Camp Dodge for the past two weeks. The company had the minimum amount of sickness of any company in their regiment, not having a man in the
hospital in the entire time for encampment.
Colonel Glen Haynor of the 168th Iowa Infantry said of Company I, it is the best Company I, it has been my pleasure to ever see in state
encampment according to Captain G. Caughlin who in commenting on the compliment called attention to the fact that the company was not as
large as on some previous years but that what it lacked in quantity it made up in quality.
Company I took first in automatic rifle practice with the team of Sgt. Henry Timmerman and Privates Roy Kinney and Fred Barge competing.
Lieutenants Chas. Seitz qualified as a sharp shooter and Lieutenant Carl Cook, Sgt. Throne Cheyney, Corporal Carl Standiford
and Private
Harry Patterson qualified for marksmanship.
The Company I kitchen was given first place several times for cleanliness and general excellence
and thanks to Cook Sgt. Arthur Buch and cooks E.M. Travers and C.P. Hamilton, the boys had such good meals that they were kept in the pink
of condition.
