1. Ref. to the early life
of Hezekiah Buffington as cited by Don Bowman.
An autobiography written by Hezekiah provides a little insight
into how the family moved around: “I was
born on an Island in the Ohio river in Mason County Virginia, in the year our
lord eighteen hundred and five and at the age of 2 years old I was carried over
the Allegheny mountains and at the age of 4 my Father moved back to Ohio
river. The next I remember was going
down the Ohio river to Guyandotte, Cabell County Virginia. I was about five years of age. Stayed there some time then the next I
remember we was back at Buffington Island.
We moved round several times til I was 16 years old then we moved down
the Ohio river about 800 miles to Gallaton County Illinois. We stayed there one year and then went back
to the Island. We stayed there 2 years
then moved to Meigs County Ohio. Then we
stayed there 3 years then I left home in my 24th year and began to do for
myself. I stayed there until 1837 being
the 32nd year of my age then I pulled up stakes.”
