At the age of three years he was taken to Adams county, Illinois, where he grew up to young manhood; meantime gathering a common school education. At the age of nineteen years he came to Mills county, settling in Oak township, where he worked at farming until 1879, when he purchased the Malvern Mills, and from thence forward he carried on the milling business. His was a common school education. May 16, 1860, Mr. B. formed a marital alliance with Miss Sara Byers, of Mills County. Of this union there are five living children: Carrie, John, Jennie, Francis and Effie. Mr. B. is a member of the M. E. church.

BUFFINGTON, FRANCIS M.

Since 1854 [1855] this gentleman has been a resident of Mills county and has therefore witnessed the greater part of its development from the period when its wild lands were still in their primitive condition, many acres being yet in the possession of the government. There came to the west men and women of strong purpose to claim the rich gifts of nature and to aid in laying the foundation for the present advancement in Mills and other counties of the great western empire. The parents of our subject were among the number that came with their families forty-six years ago [1855] and throughout the intervening period Francis M. Buffington has been a representative of the agricultural class. Splendid success has been achieved by him and today he is the owner of one thousand acres of valuable land.

He was born March 12, 1835, in Meigs county, Ohio, a son of Hezekiah and Elizabeth (Barringer) Buffington. The family is of English lineage and was founded in America by three brothers [Thomas, Joel, William], who located in Virginia, one of whom [Joel] was the great-grandfather of our subject. The grandfather [Jacob] was born in the Old Dominion and married a lady [Amelia Ann Milban Harvey] who was a native of Maryland. Hezekiah Buffington, the father, was born in Ohio and in 1837 removed from the Buckeye state to Adams county, Illinois, where he remained until 1854 [1855], when he came to Mills county, Iowa, here spending his remaining days. His death occurred in 1864 [18 Feb 1865]. His wife was a native of Pennsylvania [Virginia] and died in 1897.

Francis M. Buffington was the fourth in order of birth in their family of ten children, seven of whom are yet living. He was but two years of age [1837] when his parents left Ohio and was about twenty years of age [1855] when they came to Iowa. After arriving at years of maturity he was married, on the 16th of May, 1861, to Miss Sarah Byers, a daughter of William and Nancy Byers, natives of Ohio, whence they came to Mills county in 1856. Six children blessed the union of Mr. and [Mrs.] Buffington, but only two are now living: Carrie, wife of Oliver Hammers, a resident of Center township, and Effie, the wife of Richard Jackson, of Oak township, Mills county. Those who have passed away are John, who died in February, 1898 [25 Feb 1899], at the age of thirty-two; Jennie E., Francis M., and Clark.

Mr. Buffington is today the owner of one thousand acres of land in Center and Oak townships, and also has other town property and other interests, owning forty shares in the Mills County Bank. Industry and careful management have been the salient points in his career and he has won his success along the lines of the old-time trite maxims: "Honesty is the best policy." and, "There is no excellence without labor." He votes with the Republican party and is a public-spirited and progressive citizen and gives hearty support and cooperation to all movements which he believes will prove of public benefit.

Editor's Note:  The arrival date of the Buffington family is based on the 1856 Iowa State Census stating that the family had live in Mills County one (1) year.

NELSON CURTIS FIELDS, an editor of the Mills County Tribune.

One of the most colorful and successful editors of the Mills County Tribune was Nelson Curtis "Nancy" Field. Born in Pottawattamie County, on 13 Apr 1868, he was a son of Arminius J. and Aurelia (Sellers) Field. He worked on the farm until he entered the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor where he graduated from the literary department with the degree of Bachelor of Arts in 1890. After graduation he taught school for a year before becoming a journalist and establishing the Mills County Tribune with N.T. Bradway, In 1895 he became the sole owner.

On the 7th of January, 1890, he married Miss Jennie Buffington, a member of an old and influential family in Mills County, but their marriage was short as Mrs. Field died the following May.

He was defeated as a candidate for state senator on the Democratic ticket from the largely Republican senatorial district composed of Mills and Montgomery counties. He began business with no capital, but through his paper and other investments he acquired seven farms totaling 1015 acres.

According to The History of Mills County, 1985, "Mr. Field published all of the news he could find, including the filing of divorce suits. In those days marriages were not dissolved unless there were adequate grounds, such suits often made lurid charges. Sometimes the litigants were offended by such publicity and for many years it was legendary that Editor Field occasionally had to dodge dissatisfied parties, some of whom came after him with a horse whip, a favorite non-lethal weapon of that day."

Buffington, E. H., farmer and stock raiser, P.O. Glenwood; was born in Illinois in the year 1844 [1843]. In 1853 [1855] his parents came to this county, and with the county young Buffington grew to man's estate. The country was new and schools were scarce, hence the major part of his education has been derived from experience. He was married in 1868 to Miss Mattie Frizzle [sic], a native of Missouri, born in 1849. They are the parents of five children: Eva E., Mary E., George W., Meda [sic] L. and Marion A.  Mr. Buffington is of German and French parentage. He has long been identified with the county and its interests; and while public spirited has not neglected matters relating to private ends. He owns a farm of 96 acres.
