East Liberty Church

(Silver Creek Township)

The East Liberty Church, of Silver Creek Township, dates back to 1857. The original members included; Rev. William Tipton, Cynthis Wyatt, Luke Tipton, Saul Tipton, W. G. Wyatt, W.L. Wyatt, J. A. Wyatt, Oscar T. Wyatt, Jane F. Wyatt.

A one-room structure began in February, 1874, when the society was organized, and became known as the Liberty Methodist Church of the Silver Creek Circuit. During the 1874 construction of the new church, some of the carpenters were Hank Lamb, Lamp Conger, Curtis Hauley and Andrew Jackson.

In 1904, a new society was organized, and it became known as the Methodist Episcopal Church, of the Malvern Circuit, Council Bluffs District, Des Moines Conference. Trustees were Sherman Jones, S.R. Hurst and Elmer Stone.

A large group of young people were received as probationers at that time. By the end of the year, there were 25 members. By 1950, the declining farm population made it increasingly difficult to maintain a congregation. In 1973, the church was forced to close its doors.
