The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints
Coonville, Pottawattamie, Iowa
Source: Mills County Genealogical Society quarterly newsletter of October, November and December, 1998; held in the Glenwood, Mills County, Iowa Public Library. Below is a copy from the Historian's office of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, recorded September 6, 1907. Many of the Members went on to Utah with the Saints on their trek west. Some stayed in southwestern Iowa, particularly in Pottawattamie, Mills and Fremont Counties. Some went to Utah and returned to Mills County. In 1848 when the town of Glenwood (then called Coonville) was settled by Latter Day Saints, the area was still in Pottawattamie county, as Mills county was not formed until 1851.
"At a meeting held by the Saints on the 16th of April, A. D. 1848, by previous appointment, at the house of Brother Libeous T. Coons. Ruben W. Strong was appointed chairman for the day: and Silas Hillman Clerk. Meeting was then opened by prair (prayer); after prair (prayer) it was motioned, seconded, and carried unanimously that the branch of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (would be) called Union Branch, Coonville."
