Mills County IAGenWeb Churches

This record was taken from the vertical file material on churches, located in the Glenwood, Mills County, Iowa Public Library, and was printed in the Mills County Genealogical Society quarterly newsletter of October, November and December, 1998. Below is a copy from the Historian's Office of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, recorded September 6, 1907. Many of those on the Members List went on to Utah with the Mormons on their trek west. Some stayed in the southwestern Iowa area, particularly in Pottawattamie, Mills and Fremont Counties. Some went to Utah and returned to Mills County. In 1848 when the town of Glenwood (then called Coonville) was settled by Mormons, the area was still in Pottawattamie county as Mills county was not formed until 1851.

A Record of the Branch of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints

Organized on the 16th of April 1848

"At a meeting held by the Saints on the 16th of April, A. D. 1848, by previous appointment, at the house of Brother Libeous T. Coons. Ruben W. Strong was appointed chairman for the day: and Silas Hillman Clerk. Meeting was then opened by prair (prayer); after prair (prayer) it was motioned, seconded, and carried unanimously that the branch of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (would be) called Union Branch, Coonville."
