This township began as Nishnabotna Township according to Wm. H. Taft, who wrote a history of Mills County, published in the Malvern newspaper, "The Leader" in 1882. Although Mud Creek still exists today, it is a branch of the Nishnabotna River which flows through the northwestern part of Mills County. The present day name of this township is Anderson, so designated in 1861. It was named for Major Robert Anderson who in 1861 attracted the attention of the world as the commander of Fort Sumter in Charleston harbor.
