Mills County Landowners of 1853
Mr. D. H. Solomon wrote, "The History of Mills County" which was published in issues of the Mills County Journal from July 15, 1876 to August 19, 1876. In the August 5, 1876 issue, he wrote, "Mills County was defined by an act of the Iowa legislature and approved January 15, 1851. The township lines were run out that year, the section lines in 1852, and the land office opened in the spring of 1853. This was only the 7th year after the Indian treaty and the 6th year after the Indians were removed. During 1853 there were lands entered in the county to the amount of 46,240 acres and at $1.25 per acre, $57,800. The number of actual settlers who entered land that year was 265, averaging 175 acres to the man. Below I give the names of all those settlers (listed by township and range numbers which may be used to determine location of purchase)."
