Henry Russie

It is the pride of the citizens of this country
that there is no limit to which natural ability, industry and honesty may
not aspire. A boy born in ignorance and poverty and reared under the most
adverse circumstances may nevertheless break from his fetters and rise to
the highest stations in the land; and the qualities do not have to be of
transcendent character to enable him to accomplish the result. One of
Marshall county's worthy citizens who refused to be held down by
unfavorable surroundings and who, by his own sheer force of character, has
made a success of his life work in Henry Russie, of Vienna township. He
began life in the great American metropolis, but believing that his
chances to rise would be greater in the rural West, he has spent most of
his life in Iowa. His birth occurred in New York City February 1, 1836. He
is the son of Daniel Russie and wife, who are given special mention in
another part of this work.
Henry Russie was four years old when he left New
York city and
