You know your grandmother died of apoplexy, but just what is that? Or dropsy? What was milk fever? Or grippe. Here's a list of old medical terms that may help you understand what conditions your ancestors had: Outdated Medical Terminology.

Railroads were an important factor in the migration of our ancestors in the second part of the 19th century, as well as in the establishment and fortunes of towns. If your town was on a railroad line, the businesses and farmers were likely to thrive. If not, well, little towns dwindled and disappeared. Railroads were also a big employer. I recommended in my first Tip Page that you use Google and Google Directory (genealogy is listed under society) for genealogical searches. Now I want to recommend that you look at Google's list of online articles and columns in the genealogical directory. The chances are good that you'll find some favorite experts to read regularly or to search for their opinions and advice about how to answer your questions and solve your problems.
