MADISON COUNTY

PROJECT DESCRIPTIONS

Listed below are descriptions of each of the planned projects for this Website.  If a project has "Not Started" after the title, no progress has yet been made on it.  If a project has "In-work" after the title, the status of the project is given on our Home Page.
Birth Records (In work)
Birth records from the Madison County Courthouse, newspaper articles, censuses, and family submissions will be transcribed and put on-line.  Records newer than 100 years old will not be posted because of privacy issues. County birth records in the early years are sparse. What was available has been posted. We are now in the process of adding to that data from the newspapers and the 1885 & 1895 censuses. This is a tedious process and will take several years to complete.
1905 Madison County State Census  (Not started)
A complete transcription of the 1905 Iowa state census will be developed and placed on-line in the Iowa Archives.  No source for this microfilm has yet been found. Due to the nature of the indexing of this census, a transcription may not be practical.
1915 Madison County State Census  (Not started)
A complete transcription of the 1915 Iowa state census will be developed and placed on-line in the Iowa Archives.  No source for this microfilm has yet been found.
1920 Madison County Federal Census  (Complete 20 Mar 2007)
A complete transcription of the 1920 Federal Census will be developed and placed on-line in the Iowa Archives. Center Township, Winterset Wards 1 & 2, Crawford, Douglas, Grand River, Jackson, Jefferson, Lee, Lincoln, & Earlham Town have been completed and are on line. The project was on hold but has been restarted on 01 Jan 2007.
1925 Madison County State Census  (Not started)
A complete transcription of the 1925 Iowa state census will be developed and placed on-line in the Iowa Archives.  No source for this microfilm has yet been found.
Death Record Index (In work)
Working with death records from the Madison County Courthouse, newspaper articles, obituaries and family submissions, a year-by-year index of deaths in Madison County will be compiled.  The information will include the full name, date of death, place of death or place of residence at time of death and burial place when available.   Also included will be both those buried out of state and those who died out of state and are buried in Madison County.
Township Page Improvements (Complete 28 Feb 2006)
The township histories will be expanded and a detailed map of each township will be added showing current towns, abandoned towns, and cemeteries with links to the respective cemetery data.
Madison County Churches  (In-work)
Photos and histories of Madison County churches will be posted.
Cemetery Index Upgrade (In-work)
As a result of the Madison County gravestones project, the Cemetery Index is being continually upgraded as new stones and/or data are found. We have also started a systematic gleaning of death notices and obituaries from the Madison County newspapers. This activity will take several years to complete.
