Back in the early 1890s Barney began to see the need of a cemetery. Through the generosity of  land owners, Henry Leasman and his wife, Mary, a plot of ground situated high on a hill just west of town was given. Soon lots were plotted and bought by people of the surrounding territory.

The first grave was dug in 1893 for Bessie Olive Palmer, the baby daughter Mr. and Mrs. Ruel Palmer.
