1947
Carl Barr, age 64, lessee of the Richey Coal Company mine, was fatally injured on Friday, November 14, when, with three other employees he was coming out of the mine in a pit car.  They were about half way out of the slope, which is very long and steep, when Barr, who was in the rear of the car, suffered a cramp in his legs, which he was subject to.  He endeavored to stand up in the car and in doing so his head struck a cross bar which pushed him back against the solid end of the car.  The end of the car was high by reason of the steep slope, and he was squeezed and his neck broken.  He was placed in an auto to be taken to a Knoxville hospital, but died when seven miles from the mine.  Deceased was married, leaving a wife and two sons.
