The records show that Grigsby Foster was enrolled 1 November 1861 at Malden West Virginia, was mustered into service 4 December 1861, place not shown, as a private, Company E, 8th Regiment Virginia Infantry, which subsequently became Company E 7th Regiment West Virginia Cavalry, and was honorably discharged as a private 31 January 1864, at Martinsburg, West Virginia, in order to reenlist as a veteran volunteer. He reenlisted in the same organization as a veteran volunteer 1 Feb 1864 at the same place and was mustered out with the company and honorably discharged as a farrier 1 Aug 1865 at Charleston, West Virginia. At the time of enrollment he stated he was born in Monroe County, West Virginia, and was 44 years of age.

History Lucas Co. 1881, p. 688: Robinson, James. Furniture and Post Office at Lucas. Birth date, place came to America in 1854. Is a practical miner and has acted as engineer for coal and iron companies. Was engaged first in coal mines in Ohio. In 1856 went to Boone Co. Va. Then came the war and he enlisted in the 13th Va. -was in many hot places during the war- taken prisoner at Winchester-was exhanged in Feb 1864. Disch June 1865. Mined for a time after the war, then took up his present work. married 1868 Sarah Shakespeare. Children: Hannah and James. Member Latter Day Saints church.
