Dear Committee,

I taught two years in rural Louisa County, I wanted to write and tell you how great I think your project is. I can thank Louisa County and Ada Smith for a wonderful early teaching experience.

I just retired after teaching thirty one years. My first two years of teaching were in Louisa County, first at Otter Creek and then Indian Creek. What wonderful experiences to recall! I remember the programs we put on. I remember studying with my 8th graders for county tests. I’m sure I leaned more than they did. I won’t forget the excitement when the kids saw Miss Smith coming down the road to visit and “how good the kids were” when she came.

I remember our great ballgames at recess time and playing fox and geese in the snow. Oh, that first year I remember trying to get the fire going. I had just graduated from high school in the spring and then started teaching in the fall. I know I made many mistakes, but I loved all those kids. I would love to get in touch with them.

I remember trying to cook beans supplied by the government. Then my mother told me I needed to soak them overnight. Today, when I smell beans cooking I visualize Otter Creek school.

I have so many memories. Thank you for causing me to remember.

               Sincerely,

               Mrs. Wilbert Norton (Rachel Larson)

               Tipton, Iowa
