This township is in the southwestern part of the county, and is bounded on the east by Marshall and Columbus City townships, on the north by Columbus City Township, on the south by Henry County, and on the west by Henry County. It is a fine township of prairie land, settled by a good class of people, those connected with the Covenator Church predominating. Among the early settlers of the township were S. K. Helmick and H. Marsden. The Burlington and Northwest Railroad runs through the northwestern part of this township, and on section 30 was laid out the village of Wyman, a small station which affords a good shipping point for the people of this neighborhood. There is but one general store in the place, and a large elevator for the storage of grain.

- - SWAMP COLLEGE NO. 6 – 1926-27 - -
Nettie Earnest

Land was deeded for Swamp College by Laura A. Burns and the school building was constructed in 1854.

Swamp College was on the Wapello to Winfield-Wyman road, approximately one mile east of the intersection of the Columbus Junction to Winfield road, one to two miles south of the Spring Run Church. The property is now owned by Mrs. Lester Gipple.

Behind the school house was a coal shed and two toilets. Inside was an oil stove, some kettles and other cookware, some dishes and silverware.

The children and I decided to have a “hot dish” at noon on Fridays. The children brought food from home; the menu consisted of vegetable soup, mashed potatoes or “maid-rites,” of which only one was served at a time. This was for only one month, but fun and nourishing. Good Friday we had an Easter Egg hunt and the last day of school we had a picnic and program.
