HISTORIC PLACES IN CAIRO, IOWA

The J. L. Murray General Store was founded in the mid 1800’s and served most every family within miles of Cairo. The new Village sign and Flag now sets proudly on the site complete with a resting bench in memory of family descendants, Jack & Mary Lehs.

The Cairo Church of God was established in 1855 by Henry Murray with the building built by Jesse VanHorn in 1876. The Land was donated by James H. Marshall. Behind the historical marker some of the building remains can still be seen.

“Old Brick.” Built in 1885 by Joshua Marshall just south of Cairo. Even though its gone, it remains the most talked about magnificent home in Louisa County. Dozens of families have lived there.

This beautiful home of John La Cornu used to stand just west of the Amity school and east of the Rossitter farm. The stone was quarried on the Dewey Jones farm on Long Creek and lumber cut and hauled by wagon from Port Louisa. A new home now sits here.

The Evangelical Church was built in 1915 and dedicated in 1916 with Rev. G. A. Stauffacher as the first pastor. The church is gone but now clearly marked by a historical marker.

Cairo, IA School

The I.O.O.F. building built in the early 1900’s provided both a community entertainment area upstairs and general store below. While this building is gone, a historical marker continues its memory.
