JAMES H. GRAHAM, M. D., a prominent physician of this county, and now residing in Grandview, was born on the 22d day of April, 1823, in Todd County, Kentucky. He was the ninth of ten children, whose parents were Mathew Graham and Genet Wilson. His father was a native of South Carolina, and was one of the early settlers of Kentucky. His parents were farmers by occupation, and people distinguished for piety, both passing through life as earnest members of the “Associate Reformed Church,” and both living to see their children grow up as earnest and practical members of the same religious body.
In 1828 the family moved to Preble County, Ohio, and in 1836 moved to Illinois, settling in what is now called Henderson County. The early education of James was a very liberal classical education, and in 1845 he entered the Ohio Medical College in Cincinnati, and graduated in 1847. After practicing for two years in Ohio he moved to Iowa in 1849, settling at Morning Sun, in this county. He pursued the practice of his profession in Morning Sun till, 1869, when he moved to Grandview where he has since resided, engaged in the practice of medicine.
The doctor is well adapted naturally for the arduous and responsible duties of a practitioner of medicine, and it will not be out of taste to here remark that he has been eminently successful, and has controlled a large and lucrative practice since he came to Iowa. He has devoted his entire attention to his profession, and has thus achieved a reputation that is second to none in our county. He has made the practice of medicine a success financially as well as materially, and although he started in life poor, is now one of the wealthy men of his community. His library is well selected and evinces close perusal.
On the 4th day of May, 1847, he was united in marriage to Mary J. Brown, a native of Ohio. He is the father of eight children, seven of whom are living. Religiously, he is a member of the United Presbyterian Church; politically, he is a strong republican.
