2. William Henry Harrison^2 REDDICK, (George Washington^1), born 18 Sep 1840 at Indiana; died 8 Nov 1903 at Seventy-Six Township, Muscatine County, Iowa; buried at Letts Cemetery, Louisa County, Iowa. He was married 6 Mar 1864, at Locust Grove or Decatur, Adams County, Ohio or Illinois to Rachel Ann STAHL, daughter of Jackson STAHL and of Lucinda Unknown. William Henry Harrison Reddick enlisted in the 33d Ohio Infantry during the Civil War. He later volunteered to join the James J. Andrews group that planned a raid into northern Georgia in April of 1862. He was one of 20 men who stole the locomotive "General" and train at Big Shanty Station (now Kennesaw), Georgia, on Saturday, April 12, 1862 (one year after the attack on Fort Sumter and the official beginning of the Civil War). The Andrews raid was authorized by Generals Mitchell/Buell and was designed to destroy bridges and communications on the railroad line between Atlanta, Georgia and Chattanooga, Tennessee. The raid did not succeed. The raiders were all captured and placed in a jail in Chattanooga. Andrews and 7 randomly chosen raiders were tried and executed. A movie called "The Great Locomotive Chase" was produced about the incident. Two of the raiders did not get on the railroad train at the rendezvous point of Marietta, Georgia. They were arrested, however, along with the 20 men who stole the train. After the executions of Andrews and the others, 14 men remained Confederate prisoners. They were held in an Atlanta prison. They attempted to escape on October 16, 1862. While 8 were successful and made their way back to Union territory, 6 were unsuccessful and recaptured. William was one of the unsuccessful ones, being recaptured in the prison yard. The six who were recaptured were later sent to the Castle Thunder prison in Richmond, Virginia, arriving there on December 7, 1862. They were at Libby prison for part of a day. They were exchanged on March 18, 1863, at City Point, on the James River. William and the other five exchangees went to Washington, D. C., where on March 25, 1862, Secretary of War Stanton presented each of them with a Medal of Honor. This group of six men were the first recipients of this award, which is commonly referred to today as the Congressional Medal of Honor. Chance, where they were standing, determined the order of the award. Jacob Parrott received the first award; William Reddick received the sixth. It could easily have been the other way around. The eight who had escaped also received Medals of Honor. Eventually, 19 of the 22 men who went to Georgia to steal the train would be so honored. The Medal was presented to the families of those who had been executed. The fourteen survivors of the 22 original raiders all returned to their Ohio regiments for further duty. William Reddick returned to his home in Adams County, Ohio. He was married there on March 6, 1864, at Locust Grove, to Rachel Stahl. They had three sons born there before they moved to Des Moines County, Iowa, in the early 1870's. They first lived near Kossuth, and then moved to Northfield. About 1874 they moved a few miles north into Louisa County, settling on a farm near Newport, where they remained for seventeen years. The family now consisted of seven boys and two girls. About 1891 they moved into northern Louisa County, near Letts, and then across the county line into Muscatine County, Seventy-Six Township, where they were living when William died in 1903. Rachel continued to live in Seventy-Six Township until her death in 1930. Descendants of William are scattered across the United States, but several are still residents of Louisa and Muscatine Counties. Rachel left a half-brother, Louis, of Paonia, Colorado; also 70 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. She was a member of the Letts Methodist Episcopal Church, and had lived in the community for the past 24 years. She died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. C. C. Altekruse, in Seventy-Six Township, after an illness of a week.

3. He was married 21 May 1893, to Della May SHAFFER, daughter of Jacob SHAFFER and of Sarah PONTZIUS. George was eight years old when his parents came to Iowa, and Louisa County has been his home ever since, 73 years. He began his business career at age 16 by renting twenty-eight acres of land and farming it for five years. He then purchased the old Florence place eight miles southeast of Wapello, which was 160 acres. He sold this after two years and moved to Newport, where he lived for two and a half years. He then rented 180 acres four miles south of Wapello and farmed that for three years. He then moved to Conesville, in Muscatine County, and farmed there until August, 1909, when he moved back to Oakville. He is a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church and the Masons.

Harold was a member of the Glad Tidings Church and was employed by Huttig Manufacturing Company of Muscatine until his retirement. He was married Jan 1923, at Muscatine, Muscatine County, Iowa to Hazel NEWELL. Pete had lived in the Muscatine area most of his life. He was a residential and a commercial painter. He had worked for a time in both Tulsa, Oklahoma and Wichita, Kansas. He was a member of St. Mary's Church. He is survived by one daughter, four grandchildren, and four great grandchildren. Two sisters, Grace Parsons, of Phoenix, Arizona, and Helen Connell, of North Liberty, also survive him. Four brothers and three sisters preceded him in death.

He had operated a trucking business in Letts for several years. Recently, he had been in charge of the Oscar Mayer hog buying station in Letts.

He later owned and operated Reddick's Music Center at Burlington, and worked for 15 years for Apps Music House of Burlington. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Eagles Lodge No. 84, and Des Moines Masonic Lodge No. 1. He had been a member of the Community of Fountain of the Sun, Mesa, Arizona. He was living in Letts in 1940.
