1. Richard¹ BUFFINGTON, son of (Father Unknown) and of (MotherUnknown), born 1654 Bovingdon Green, Marlow on the Thames, Buckinghamshire,England; died Jan 1747/48 at Chester County, Pennsylvania. He was married(1) 1677c, at England to Ann/Anne UNKNOWN; and was married (2) 1695+, toFrancis GRUBB; and was married (3) 1720, to Alice PALMER.
Richard Buffington/Boveington is the immigrant ancestor of the Louisa CountyBuffingtons. He was a pioneer settler in New Jersey, signing the West JerseyCompact, officially dated on the 3d of March 1676. He settled in Upland,which later became Chester County, Pennsylvania, prior to the receiving byWilliam Penn of the Charter to the Province of Pennsylvania. Richard workedwith the Quakers, but in 1699 joined the Baptists. He is considered the firstperson in America to have left money in his will for a Baptist Church. Hewas first married to Anne, last name unknown.
His second wife was believed to be Frances Grubb, widow of his business partner,John Grubb. His third wife was Alice Palmer, daughter of John and Mary Palmerof Concord Township. Information came from the Buffington Family in America,by Ralph Buffington.

4. iii. Ruth BUFFINGTON, born 1682. She was married 1705, to Ezekiel HARLAN.Ruth and Ezekiel's children were Ezekiel, Elizabeth, Mary, Joseph, Ruth andBenjamin. Information from Ralph Buffington.

6. v. William BUFFINGTON, born 1688c. It is not known whether William wasever married or not. His father conveyed land to him in 1720/1 which he conveyedto a Robert Jefferis on August 4, 1721. It appears that he was supportedby nephews from 1753-7.
7. vi. John BUFFINGTON, born 1694c; died 1736. John married Sarah Eavensonand settled in West Bradford. He had four children at the time of his death.
8. vii. Hannah BUFFINGTON, born 1698c. Hannah married Jeremiah Dean in 1720.He was from West Bradford and supposedly had come from London. Children wereJames, Nehemiah, John and Mary.
9. viii. Mary BUFFINGTON, born 1700c. Mary married William Baldwin of ChesterTownship. He died in 1722; she then married Charles Turner, of Birmingham.Some confusion exists as to whether she or her sister, Elizabeth, marriedPeter Collins.
10. ix. Elizabeth BUFFINGTON, born 1705c. Elizabeth first married Peter Collins,of East Bradford, but he died in 1733. Elizabeth then married John Freeman,a widower, in Friends Meeting 11th month 1734/5. Elizabeth had no known children.
11. x. Lydia BUFFINGTON, born 1710c. Lydia married George Martin, of WestBradford. Children were Joseph, John, James, Rachel, Lydia, Mary, Elizabethand Ann. She died before her husband, who remarried to a Mary Nichols in1757, and died June 22, 1780. Children of Richard¹ and Alice (PALMER)BUFFINGTON were as follows:
12. i. Abigail²BUFFINGTON, born Sep 1721; died Apr 1813. Abigailmarried Edward Seed, of East Bradford, on January 1, 1741. He died in 1751.Their children were Abigail, Adam, Richard, George, James and Mary. Abigailmarried a second time, to David Fling, and had five children: Alice, John,Phebe, Hannah and David.
13. ii. Joseph BUFFINGTON, born 1723c; died 17 Nov 1785. Joseph was nevermarried.
14. iii. Alice BUFFINGTON, born 1725c; died 19 Jul 1775. Alice was marriedat the Old Swedes Church, Wilmington, Deleware, on 3 January 1745 to RobertMcArthur, and had one son, John McArthur, before Robert died. She marriedagain about 1749 to James Hance. Their children were: Joseph, Mary, Hannah,Ann, James, Richard and Ruth.
5. Thomas²BUFFINGTON, (Richard¹), born 1685 at Upland,Chester County, Pennsylvania; died 1739 at Chester County, Pennsylvania.He was married Ruth COPE. Thomas Buffington's exact date of birth is unknown,one source stating 1680 in Upland and another in Chichester in 1685. He wasmarried two or three times; only the name of one wife is known. The authorof this compilation on the Buffingtons of Louisa County, Keith M. Street,believed that he had a Buffington connection, but recent findings have disproventhat. The Buffingtons of Louisa County are descended from this Thomas Buffingtonand his wife Ruth Cope. Ruth was the daughter of Oliver and Rebecca Cope.Gilbert Cope has published an extensive genealogy on the Cope family, tracingRuth's ancestry back to Charlemagne, for example. and includes informationon the Buffingtons. 17. iii. Richard BUFFINGTON, born 1716c. Richard was married to Ann Morganon 5 August 1739. After she died he was married to Ruth Skeen. The childrenby the first marriage to Ann Morgan were: Richard, Joseph, Thomas, Annn,William, Ruth and Isabella.
18. iv. Rebecca BUFFINGTON, born 1720c. Rebecca married an Atherton.
19. v. Ruth BUFFINGTON, born 1722c. Ruth married John Ferree on April 10,1736. He was from Strasburg Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Theirchildren were Ruth, who married John Black in 1760; John, who married BettyBailey; Susanna, who married Wm. Truman on 30 Oct 1777.

15. William³ BUFFINGTON, (Thomas²,Richard¹), born 1700c at Chester County, Pennsylvania; died 1784at Hampshire County, Virginia. He was married (1) Alice RUPP; and was married(2) Mary SMITH; and was married (3) 1747c, to Magdalena (Lena) FERREE. WilliamBuffington and Alice Rupp had several children, the exact number not known.Alice probably died in the 1730's or 40's, when the family was living inLancaster County, Pennsylvania. William next married Magdalena (Lena) Ferreecirca 1747 and moved to the Fairfax Lands in the northern neck of Virginia.In late 1778 or early 1779 William married his third wife, Mary Smith, widowof Christopher Smith. 29. Joel⁴ BUFFINGTON, (William³, Thomas²,Richard¹), born 1735/6 at Hampshire County, Virginia. He was marriedElizabeth LOGAN, daughter of William LOGAN and of Mary SMITH. Joel was marriedby 1772 and was active in real estate in Western Virginia, Kentucky and probablyin Ohio and Pennsylvania. He bought a property called Buffington Island in1787 that many of the family have legends concerning. His sons Joseph andWilliam are sometimes listed as first buying this island. The Isle of DuVolis listed some places as the same as Buffington Island, and in other sourcesis shown as a separate island. Joel is the progenitor of all of the LouisaCounty Buffington family, with several of his children residing in LouisaCounty in the 1840s and '50s, but most not staying long. Joel's wife, ElizabethLogan was part Indian, it is alleged, but no documentation for this claimexists that I have seen. William lived in Jackson County, West Virginia, until1841, when he moved to Louisa County, Iowa, where he stayed about six yearsbefore briefly moving to Marion County, Iowa, where he stayed about a year.He voted in April, 1846, in the first election held in Lake Prairie Townshipin Marion County. There were 22 voters besides William, including (his brothers)A. C. Buffington, S. W. Buffington and James Q. Buffington. In 1848 he movedto Mahaska County, Section 36 in Harrison Township, where he spent the restof his life. Mary Rowley, his first wife, died in Louisa County on 7 August1841, aged 38 years, and is buried in Buffington Cemetery, Louisa County,Iowa.
