CAIRO E. U. B. CHURCH
1958

From conference time in May until September 21st Rev. John Deedrick, retired, supplied at Cairo. The people appreciated him very much and the work held up well. Upon our coming as Supply pastor in September the people received us warmly and made us feel very much at home. For one semester I commuted back and forth to school in Iowa City, but at the opening of the second semester we moved from the parsonage back to Iowa City. Total money raised in 1958 - about $23.00. Average ch. attendance, 24. In 1959 both finance and attendance are better so far. Mrs. Fuhrman has organized two Bible surprise Clubs, one for ages 8-11, the other for the intermediates. This has proved to be a very popular feature with both parents & children. Refreshments are provided by the Ladies each week. In addition to their usual duties the Ladies aid is engaged in a Bible study course. A different member leads the discussion each month. Because of the population shift in the community several of the older families no longer attend out services. However, aggressive effort is being put forth by the members to interest new families moving onto farms in the community. A limited water supply has been a problem for sometime, but plans are being discussed to remedy this situation. Cairo needs a revival but some signs are encouraging nevertheless. It is hoped that with full-time leadership the church may experience a strong comeback.
