Elmwood Cemetery
also known as Morning Sun Cemetery
Morning Sun Township

Twp. 73 North Range 4 West of 5th P.M., SW 1/4 NE 1/4, Section 25

Elmwood Cemetery is under the care and management of the Morning Sun Township Trustees. Directions to the cemetery, from Highway 61, turn west onto Route 78 to Morning Sun. Turn right (north) onto X37 (South Main Street). Go several blocks, cross Division Street then turn left (west) on First Street. Keep straight for a few blocks. First Street ends at the cemetery entrance.

In 1980 members of the Des Moines County Genealogical Society of Burlington, Iowa, walked this cemetery and a data base was developed by Paul French from the information scribed on the stones. Herbert Price and Paul extracted the WPA information for Elmwood burials from the Louisa Co. listing and matched it to the DMCGS survey -- a somewhat daunting task as the WPA information was not sorted by cemetery.

The oldest grave marker found was that of Juliet Hephzibah Cannon, wife of Rev. R. E. Cannon, who died May 7, 1855.

June, 2014 Paul French worked with Roger Wyss, Morning Sun Township Clerk and Cemetery Sexton, in developing better maps for this large cemetery. The task of matching gravestones in the DMCGS survey with lot owner names from the cemetery maps was begun.

This information was contributed to Louisa Co. IAGenWeb by Paul French, in March, 2015.

Building on this information, during the summer of 2015, Lynn and Bob McCleary continued to work with Roger Wyss in updating the cemetery data base through August 31, 2015. Over 3,000 photos were taken and may be viewed on the Iowa Gravestone Photo Project. Click Here to View Photos

We are very appreciative of the efforts of so many to provide this documentation for Elmwood Cemetery. Names in this Register are presented by burial location. Additional information has been added from cemetery records, grave stone photos, death records and researchers' personal records. Remember to be flexible with the spelling of names. Submitted by Lynn McCleary, August 2015.
