Transcribed by Shirley Plumb, June 30, 2019DUDGEON FUNERAL HOME ON BANKS OF IOWA Ross Dudgeon entered the funeral and undertaking business in Wapello in June, 1937, when he bought out John G. Keck. Keck’s employee, Geo. Jamison, became a partner with Dudgeon at this time. Five years later Dudgeon took over full ownership.
In years past, John Keck’s father operated a furniture and casket factory on one side of the present building housing McCulley Furniture (formerly Dudgeons), and lived on the other. Later the building became Keck’s grocery on one side and furniture on the other.
The printing shop of the late Rev. Harry Druse was upstairs in the building at this time.
In the early 1940’s Dudgeon purchased the McCullough home on the banks of the Iowa at the edge of the bridge and remodeled it into one of Iowa’s most beautiful funeral homes. He has recently installed new air-conditioning and sound equipment. Dudgeon is a graduate of the Chicago College of Mortuary Science.
Mr. and Mrs. Raymond McCullough purchased the furniture business from Dudgeon in 1953.
