My great-great aunt named Sarah Jane BENTLY THOMPSON, and her husband William THOMPSON are buried in the Natl Cemetery at Keokuk. He was in the 3rd Iowa Cavalry during the Civil War, and she was a nurse during that conflict. They lived out their lives in Keokuk.
Some years ago, from the National Archives in Wash. D.C., I obtained a copy of Sarah's pension application in which she detailed her service as a nurse at various Union Army Hospital's in eastern Missouri and Keokuk also. Her, or his, obituary states that she was the first female to be permitted burial in the Natl Cemetery and because of her service as a nurse during the war. Her and his grave are located in the southeast corner of that cemetery which I visited a few years ago. Would some of the details of her nursing service, outlined in her pension application, be an item which would interest anyone?LaRee Cobb Sun March 14, 1999

My name is Ron Cockrell & I live in Park Forest, IL. My father left when I was about 4, so I really do not know much about my family background ... or used to not know. About 3 years ago my younger brother and I started tracing our roots. We have traced them to our great great grandfathe Daniel COCKRELLl who, aroung 1890, resided in or around Ottumwa Iowa. From information we can get he was born in Ohio but things are very sketchy. We have located the site where the COCKRELLS started in Reedsville, VA @ a creek called Cockrells Creek .. We took a trip there and found the records where there was originally a 500 acre plantation belonging to the COCKRELLS. We are trying now to establish the link between Daniel, his father, whom we believe to be John, and wife Virginia ... do you have any information?? Thank you.Lou Ricker Thurs March 11, 1999

My ggrandparents William and Sarah Jane RETHERFORD;RETHERFORD BALLINGER lived in Lee County, as well as Davis, Mahaska and Van Buren Co's. The time period was in the mid to late 1800's I believe. There were BALLINGER and REATHERFORD relatives living in this area also, just from old family stories. In checking others sites for Lee county, that there was a sites for cities, towns and other "places", and in reading the place names listed, I found the name "Ballinger" listed under "other places". So I was trying to find out where, in Lee co., this Ballinger place might be located, hoping for some clue to other possible family members. Thanks for your time and help. Helen Ballinger Michael

WILLIAM SOLLARS FAMILY - From the mid 1850s through to 1912, the Buckhorn Tavern, a hostelry and north/south stage stop at Charleston, Montrose Twp., Lee Co., Iowa was owned and operated by 6'3" tall William Sollars, his wife and family. A Keokuk Newspaper had Reporter Potter go there and do a story on him and the Buckhorn Tavern in 1909. William married twice and raised two families here at the Buckhorn in Charleston. He was justice of the peace, and even had a side business building furniture and coffins as needed locally. They had rooms for travelers who were well fed at Eleanor's table. Can anyone provide me with "anything" more on the Buckhorn, once a "landmark" in Charleston and the William SOLLARS family?. I would be most happy to exchange information with any even remotely interested interested.
