NELSON--Searching to prove or disprove information published in the Nodaway County Missouri 1882 History, page 545, about my great great grandfather, Joseph Riter NELSON. The book says that Joseph Riter NELSON is a native of Louisiana, and born near New Orleans, March 13, 1836. Additionally it says that when he was but a boy he accompanied his parents to Lee County, Iowa, where he was principally reared and educated. (He would have been there for about 16 years) It goes on to say, in 1852, with them he moved to the Territory of Utah. My research has found Joseph Riter NELSON, son of John and Agnes Lovina Matilda Ann (Nancy) TENANT NELSON born in Ashton-under-Lyne, Lancashire, England on March 14, 1833. In 1853, after his mother remarried a Thomas LEIGH, Joseph R. with his mother and sister, Mary Jane, left Liverpool England on the ship FLACON, March 16, 1853 and arrived at the port of New Orleans, May 18, 1853. They traveled up the Mississippi to Council Bluffs, Iowa (then Kanesville) and departed on July 14, 1853 with Appleton M. Harmon wagon train, arriving in Utah on October 18, 1853. Does anyone have any records that would show that Joseph Riter NELSON came to the US and specifically to Lee County IOWA between 1836 and 1852? I'm sure that it is entirely possible that the NELSON family came to Lee County, Iowa from England by way of New Orleans port and then returned to England after having lived in Lee County for a number of years. I need any evidence that this family, John and Ann (or any of her other names listed above) Tennant NELSON, and their children, Lames (or James?), Joseph Riter, and Mary Jane, lived in Lee County Iowa at any time between 1836 and 1852.

Seeking information on THOMPSON & BENTLY families. A summary of what I have gathered so far is that William THOMPSON married Sarah Jane BENTLEY at Oregon City, Or. in Dec. 1852. Sarah Jane had been on a journey over the Oregon Trail with her parents, Joseph and Elizabeth BENTLEY, from Delaware Co. Indiana, when the couple met at the Dalles on the Columbia River where THOMPSON owned a trading post. They had one child while living in Oregon named Joseph C. THOMPSON, born Sept. 1, 1853. Soon after they returned to the states settling in Keokuk, Lee County, Iowa. In August 1861 THOMPSON enlisted in Co. G, 3rd Iowa Cavalry and served throughout the Civil War. Sarah Jane served at several places in Eastern Missouri at Union Army Camps as a nurse during the war. They lived out their lives at Keokuk and both are buried in the National Cemetery there. Sarah Jane received a pension because of her nursing service during the war and she died at Keokuk in 1910. Any additional information greatly appreciated. Thank you, Bill Bentley.

Seeking information on Asa MOUNTS in Lee County on page 393 in the Iowa Census for 1850. He was living in Montrose. He could be my Great Grandfather, & I am trying to verify this fact . The 1850 census shows a Asa MOUNTS as a grocer, wife Elizabeth, children, John, James, & Laura. There was a farmer living with them by the name of Eli. I need to know the relationship with ASA and ELI.. Also found other people by the name of MOUNTS living nearby. There were Eli, Julia A., Milton, Pawlownia, & Providence, MOUNTS, all on the same page or the following. Need to know if this Asa MOUNTS is the same one that moved to Montgomery County, Missouri in time for the 1860 Census. Thank you!
Another name, JAMES, appears & he is not shown in the Missouri Census in Montgomery County, of 1860. However, he did show up in deed transfer's in the MOUNTS Family later on in Montgomery County. A lot of these records were burned in a fire at the courthouse. Listed in 1850 census was a 69 year old man named Eli. According to the story which appeared in the Hawkeye Heritage some time ago, there was a Eli MOUNTS who was born 1845 in Montrose, Iowa. He ran away from his cruel step brother. His father worked on the river as a flat boatsman. He survived the wreak of the Lady Elgin outside of Milwaukee on Lake Michigan. He then joined the Union Navy. He went on to become a whaler and narrowly missed death severval times. He became shipwreched in Africa and wandered around and finally escaped the natives with a trader. The first Eli would have been 64 at the time of the second ones birth. I know it is not impossible, but is highly unlikely to be true. The story that appeared in Hawkeye had its orgin in Montrose. Maybe somebody remembers the articile and could give me more background information. The older Eli, could have been my Gr.Gr. Grandfather, but I am not sure of anything nowadays. Let me know. Searching for information on James Presley BARNETT b. 1856 in Armstrong Co., PA, brother of my great-great-grandmother. Known to some of the family as Presley, he married Mary E. C.?? (b. 1859 OH, maiden name unknown) probably in Iowa and settled at Ft. Madison at least by 1900. He was still living there in 1936, when he was mentioned in the obituary of his sister Martha Jane Barge BARNETT BAIRD of Greeley, CO. What we're really after is a death date and place, to lead to a death certificate that might give his mother's name. We would welcome any suggestions.

I am most interested in finding data on my ggggrandmother, Maria GALARNEAU, who states on the WI National Census, that she was born in IA in the 1820's. The story in our family is that one of four people (RICHARD, LA POINTE, GALARNEAU, or FOUNTAINE) who were married in Pairie DuChein, WI was a Native American. I thought maybe Maria was that one....no way to prove the theory if I can't find a record of the GALARNEAUs in Iowa.
I know many of my ancestors/relatives ended up in Keokuk, Lee, IA. after living in MO, IL, CO etc. .... the DAMANs, WELCHes, RICHARDs and LA POINTEs and FOUNTAINE's. As a matter of fact, some still live there. My gr uncles and gr grandfather worked in a sugar factory in Keokuk in the very eary 1900s. My gr grandfather and gr grandmother, Eli RICHARD and wife Idel (Adele) FOUNTAINE RICHARD, are buried in the IA National Cemetary. My gr grandfather, Francis Marion DAMAN was in a veterans hospital there that later burned down... would also like to know more about his time there...Is there any way I can find out the Indian tribes that were in Lee County in the 1800s? What churches were there that kept birth, death or marriage records? What territory was IA in 1820?
Can you give me any answers or further information? My name is Marti Wade. I was in your fair city in 1936 to visit my great Aunt Lena and again in 1990 with my husband to check out some of my ancestral roots and enjoyed it so, found the people very wonderful!Sandra Kisor Thurs May 14, 1998
