I am most interested in finding data on my ggggrandmother, Maria GALARNEAU, who states on the WI National Census, that she was born in IA in the 1820's. The story in our family is that one of four people (RICHARD, LA POINTE, GALARNEAU, or FOUNTAINE) who were married in Pairie DuChein, WI was a Native American. I thought maybe Maria was that one....no way to prove the theory if I can't find a record of the GALARNEAUs in Iowa.
I know many of my ancestors/relatives ended up in Keokuk, Lee, IA. after living in MO, IL, CO etc. .... the DAMANs, WELCHes, RICHARDs and LA POINTEs and FOUNTAINE's. As a matter of fact, some still live there. My gr uncles and gr grandfather worked in a sugar factory in Keokuk in the very eary 1900s. My gr grandfather and gr grandmother, Eli RICHARD and wife Idel (Adele) FOUNTAINE RICHARD, are buried in the IA National Cemetary. My gr grandfather, Francis Marion DAMAN was in a veterans hospital there that later burned down... would also like to know more about his time there...Is there any way I can find out the Indian tribes that were in Lee County in the 1800s? What churches were there that kept birth, death or marriage records? What territory was IA in 1820?
Can you give me any answers or further information? My name is Marti Wade. I was in your fair city in 1936 to visit my great Aunt Lena and again in 1990 with my husband to check out some of my ancestral roots and enjoyed it so, found the people very wonderful!Sandra Kisor Thurs May 14, 1998

Madison, Iowa City Directory as a widowed woman. Helen was my grandmother. She was supposedly left on a doorstep of a church shortly after her birth, est. 1 SEP 1894, and was raised by Mrs E. ALCOTT.
In 1909 Helen ALCOT is listed as a student and residing with a Charles ALCOT, who worked at Anthes House Restau., at 1806 Division Street in Ft. Madison, IA. On the 14th Census of Ft. Madison, IA - 1920 - Dorothy SMITH is listed as a "roomer" aged 3 1/2 yrs ( she was actually 4 1/2 yrs) residing with ALCOTT, Elenor at 3013 Shawnee. Frank and Helen ALCOTT SMITH had one other child, James Roy, b. 1916. James was taken to MO to live with relatives of his father after his father's death. Dorothy was left in the care of Mrs. E. I am looking for my ancestors. My Great-Great Grandmother, Elizabeth MILLAGE (Melege or Meloge) who may have been the daughter of Henry Millage (Melege or Meloge) born in Pennsylvania ca 1820's. Elizabeth Millage was married in Lee County on 25 August 1848 to Marcus (Marquis) HULL. This was her second marriage. Her first marriage was to Isaiah AUSTIN who died shortly after they were married (within 2 years or so). The last name on the marriage certificate in Lee County when she married Marcus Hull was listed as AUSTIN.
Family folklore also has it that she is the daughter of grand-daughter of CHIEF KEOKUK. I don't know the dates when Moses Keokuk, Chief Keokuk's son was born, but my Elizabeth E. may even be his sister. I can't connect this for sure It is said that Phoebe Keokuk (named after a bird) may be Chief Keokuk's daughter who married Henry Millage.Family folklore also has it that Elizabeth E. was Cherokee. However, Keokuk is Sac indian.
Elizabeth E. Millage and Marcus Hull had the following daughters and one son in Lee County, Iowa: 1) Sidney Hull (a son I believe) died the same year Nancy Hull was born. He was still an infant. 2) Elizabeth Hull (was a deaf-mute).3) Sara Elizabeth Hull married John Marion CARROLL on 25 April 1866 in Navada, Vernon County, Missouri. Sara & John Carroll settled in Iberia, Madden County, Missouri and died there. Nancy Hull married Henry Washington CARROLL 1 May 1876.
Marcus Hull served in the Civil War. Sara Elizabeth Hull applied for a pension after Marcus Hull died from injuries sustained during the war (he was 58 years old, too old to fight, but he served in the Civil War by picking up injuried and dead bodies off the battlefield--he suffered from major hernias as it is said that "everything fell out".) Sara was left destitute and had to move in with one of her daughters after being forced to sell her home.
I would appreciate hearing from anyone who can help me confirm any info at all on this part of my ancestry.Coach Mon March 16, 1998
