After having shipped in the neighborhood of 25 to 30 carloads of strawberries out of Montrose and Sandusky the early part of the berry season this year, the shipper was unable to find any suitable market for any more berries, so the shipping was suspended. Several of the local patches were turned over to outside pickers. Last week the town of Montrose was literally packed with trucks from Des Moines, Dubuque, Mason City, Cedar Rapids, Waterloo, and Muscatine, looking for berries. Most all of the trucks hauled from 50 to 200 cases, with the exception of one that loaded on 330 cases which is just 90 cases less than a car load. Never before has Montrose berry growers ever disposed of their crops in the manner of which they are disposing of their crops this year. Heretofore all of the market for strawberries was entirely taken care of by the shipper, and all of the berries that went out of here was shipped out by train.
