Mrs. Jennie May REEVES, one of Lee county’s oldest and most highly respected citizens, died at her home at age 94. She was born in English Provinces in New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, 18 March 1835, the daughter of Seth and Abagil DAGGETT, the fifth child in a family of thirteen children. At age sixteen, she came with her parents to the states and settled near Milwaukee, Wisconsin. On 4 December 1853, she married James REEVES at Fredonia, Wisconsin and had three children, all of whom survive. Mr. REEVES responded to Abraham Lincoln’s call for volunteers at the opening of the Civil War. After being wounded in the battle of Shiloh, Mr. REEVES was returned to his home. They came to Lee county in the early 60’s and settled at Montrose where he died about 37 years ago. Survived by; Mrs. P.W. BOWEN of Montrose, Mrs. A.V. LEFFLER of Kansas City, Missouri and Geo REEVES of Quincy, Illinois, one sister Mrs. E.L. HARVEY of Evanston, Illinois, one brother, A.S. DAGGETT of Fredonia, Wisconsin, who visited her recently, not having seen each other for forty-two years. One sister preceded her in death on the day before Thanksgiving last. Buried Montrose.

Thomas Edward LINK, the son of Mr. and Mrs. G.C. LINK of Montrose, died at the home on Middle Road, Sunday. He was born 5 September 1927 at Montrose, the son of G.C. and Ruth MARSHALL LINK. Surviving; parents, one brother, John Junior, his grandparents. Funeral services were held at Latter Day Saints church in Montrose.

24 January 1929

The message announcing the death of Mrs. Sarah STORKS was received here Tuesday morning and in her death another and almost the last of those who were the earlier residents of this community. Her death occurred at the home of her daughter, Mrs. L.C. KURTZ, in Des Moines, Tuesday. Sarah Prouse ANDERSON, was born 7 January 1842 in Oh. and came with her parents to Iowa in 1855, first living in the Tmaa? Town neighborhood in Des Moines county. Later north of Kingston. From this home she married William Davis STORKS, 18 December 1862. Mr. STORKS, who was serving in the Union Army at the time, being home on furlough. When he was mustered out, they went to housekeeping in the vicinity of where Oakville is now located. Fall of 1895, they moved to Oakville, which was their home until death. They had six children; Theo. M. died 31 March 1926, David Wallace, who died 5 April 1624(not my typo); Viola E. who died 1 June 1923, one son died in infancy. So of this family only two remain; Mrs. Anna E. MILLER of Montrose, and Mrs. Cora L. KURTZ of Des Moines, one sister, Mrs. M.A. LETT of Council Bluffs; one brother, Chas A. ANDERSON, Alexis, Illinois, 11 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. Mr. STORKS preceded her in April 1911 ? Buried in Wapello cemetery.

Mrs. Hulda Beaty CALDWELL of Charleston died at her home Tuesday. She was born 14 June 1838 in Oh., the daughter of Isaac and Mahela MCCORD BEATY. Came to Lee Co., in 1846 with her parents and has spent the greater part of her life here. She married John CALDWELL in 1873 in Taylor County Iowa. No children. Surviving; two brothers and two sisters; Edward BEATY of Argyle, Ross BEATY of Charleston, Mrs. Sarah GREEN, Clearfield, Iowa and Mrs. W.B. DOHERTY of Argyle. Taken to Keokuk and temporarily placed in the city vault and later be buried in the Embury Cemetery.

31 January 1929

Word has been received of the death of Mrs. W.T. WILKINSON of Des Moines, who for several years was a resident of Montrose. They came here in 1875. Captain WILKINSON was a candidate for legislature in 1879 as a republican but as the county was strongly democratic at the time, he was not elected. She leaves husband and one daughter.

7 February 1929

Mrs. Elizabeth SEYMOUR died at the home of Mr. and Mrs. George VANAUSDALL, here 2 February 1929. She was born 12 August 1849 in Cornwall, England and she married in England to David SEYMOUR 18 April 1870. They stayed in England four years after their marriage and then came to the U.S. They had nine children, six of whom survive; William, Davenport, Iowa, John, Rock Island, Illinois, Frank and Edwin, Chicago, Mrs. C.A. HERSCHY, Yardly, Pa., and Mrs. George VANAUSDALL of Montrose. She was the daughter of Frank and Loveday EDWARDS. Her husband was the late Rev. David SEYMOUR. She leaves 30 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren. Funeral was held from the Methodist Episcopal church in Montrose. Was taken to the vault pending better road conditions when she will then be buried in Montrose cemetery.

Word has been received here of the death of Mrs. James DYE of East Moline, mother of Mrs. Warren NIGHT, who left Tuesday to attend the funeral.

Mr. James UTLEY left Tuesday to attend his brothers funeral in Keokuk. This is the way I found it in the old papers, however, someone wrote in that it is a half brother, John Ashton UTLEY. I personally do not know that that is fact.

14 March 1929

Zack OWEN, prominent farmer who has resided here in Montrose for more than 70 years, died at the St. Joseph's hospital Sunday. His farm was one of the show places in this portion of the state. He was born 23 August 1857 in Montrose, the only son of Robert S. and Eliza PECK OWEN and at the time of his death, he was 71. Married Lily M. WARD in Montrose 3 October 1893. There were no children. His wife is the only immediate survivor. Services were held from St.Barnabas church in Montrose.

Mr. Richard H. WAHRER, a prominent farmer of near Charleston died last Wednesday 6 March 1929, age 33. He was born in Charleston, 18 January 1896, the son of Joseph and Barbara SELL WAHRER. His entire life was spent in Lee county. Survived by parents; three brothers and one sister, William F. of Wyoming, Illinois, and Maurice W. and Truman J. both of Charleston and Miss Amanda MEINHARDT of Barring, Missouri. Buried Charleston cemetery.

Mrs. Amanda MCCANN, a life long resident of Montrose, died at her home here this morning. She was born in Montrose 30 April 1851, the daughter of David nd Jelhima? JOHNSON MILLHOUSE. In 1872, she married John MCCANN in Ft.Madison and had eight children, two of whom preceded her in death. Member of St. Mary Catholic church in Montrose. Leaves husband and following children; Dave of Wichita, Ks., Mrs. E.C. THOMPSON of Osceo’s Ar., Mrs. Ben MITCHELL of Montrose, Mrs. Harry OSBORN of Ft. Stelacoom?,Wa. Mrs. L.A. KNOBBS of Keokuk, and Mrs. Ray ANDERSON of Donnellson, sister, Mrs. James MAXWELL, of Packwood, Iowa. Buried Cath. Cemetery Ft. Madison.

Mr. and Mrs. Harold W. PRICE of Montrose, a girl born 18 March 1929.

Miss Arabel MCCANN married Chas. FARRIS, both of Montrose.

Miss Zola STOTTLER married John MARSHALL, both of near Galland. Bride is daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. STOTTLER. Will live on a farm near Galland.

Mr. and Mrs. R.L.REED had a bunco party.

Mrs. John LARSON, a resident of near Montrose for 25 years, died at her home, Monday. Mary CARLSON was born on 10 April 1874 in Dalsland, Sweden and came to this country in 1895 with her sister. Married John LARSON 4 May 1904 in Keokuk and had five children, all of whom survive. Leaves husband and children; Oscar of Hannibal, Missouri, Hilda of Denmark, Esther of Keokuk, and Agnes and Harold at home. Two sisters Mrs. Augusta CARLSON of Keokuk, and Miss Emma CARLSON of Chicago, half brother; Theodore CARLSON of Montrose. Buried in Scandanavian cemetery.

Mrs. Letitia EKSTRAND, who has been a resident of Ft. Madison for 61 years, died at the home of her sister, Mrs. W.B. FREDERICK. She was born in Montrose 27 June 1860 and went ot Ft.Madison with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. B.F. ANDERSON in 1868. She was a member of Methodist church and active in different circles of that organization. Her grandmother, Mrs. Frances ANDERSON, who was a charter member of the First M.E. church at Dubuque, Iowa and the first church in the state, is buried in the old Montrose cemetery. Survived by two sisters, Mrs. W.B.FREDERICK and Mrs. H.H. BUCK, Wever, Iowa. Buried Elmwood cemetery in Ft. Madison.

Mrs. David HOUGHTON, an old resident of Montrose and widow of the late David HOUGHTON, Civil War veteran, died at the St. Joseph hospital, Monday. Mary Ann RAY was born at Richmond, Ohio, 18 January 1849, the only child of Joseph and Jane RAY. Came to Montrose with her parents when a small child and made her home here until she came to live with Mrs. Bert CROSBY of Keokuk. Married David James HOUGHTON on 11 July 1866 in Montrose. Had no children. Her husband died five years ago.

Miss Helen VANAUSDALL married Wm. MARSHALL, both of Montrose. Bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George VANAUSDALL of this place. Will make their home at the present with the grooms parents.

Mr. and Mrs. Irvin LAMB, a new girl born last Friday.

This community was greatly saddened by the passing of Mrs. Laura WARDLOW, whose death occurred at her home, 8 May 1929. Mrs. Laura UPP WARDLOW was born 6 July 1868. She was the last surviving member of the well known UPP family of Hamilton, Illinois. Mr. Geo. UPP of Ivy Wild, the noted artist being a brother. Leaves nephews and nieces; Marvin UPP of Moberly, Missouri, Miss Lucia UPP of Anaheim, Ca.

Louis E. MORGAN, a life long resident of Montrose, died at St. Joseph’s hospital, Sunday. He was born in Montrose 23 November 1861, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph MORGAN. He was a farmer and not married. Survived by two uncles; A.M. MORGAN of this city, and H.H.MORGAN of Memphis, Missouri. Funeral services was held from the Cunningham funeral parlor. Buried Grove cemetery.,

Milton Joseph KNIGHT was born in Henry county 23 July 1868, the son of Joseph and Margaret KNIGHT and died 16 May 1929. He married Mary Margaret BYERS who with the four children survive him; Verlin of Carrol, Iowa, Mrs. Theodore LEWICK of Ft. Madison, Robert and Merna at home. Three brother and one sister; Mrs. Robert MINGUS of Long, Ca., Peter KNIGHT of Montrose, Fred KNIGHT of Sioux City, Iowa, Henry KNIGHT of Ripley, Ok.; three grandchildren; Hazel, Irene, Melva June and Verna May. One daughter preceded him. Buried Montrose.

John JUDD, a resident of Montrose for thirty years, died at his home here. He was born in Ireland 85 years ago and came to Montrose in 1965(not my typo). He was a retired farmer. Three children were born to this union all of whom have preceded the father in death. One son died in infancy, and two daughters died during the past year. Since the death of his daughter Elizabeth, last November, Mr. and Mrs. Everett BUNKER have made their home with him and have taken care of him. No immediate relatives survive. Did not say anything about a wife.

The director of the American State Bank announced at 3 o’clock Monday afternoon that the doors of the bank will not open for business Tuesday morning. The directors stated in their announcement, that it is their opinion that the debtors will be paid in full when the assets have all been fully liquidated.

Miss Edna HARMON married Joseph RUBLE, both of this place. Bride is daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd HARMON who are living near Montrose and groom is son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph B. RUBLE of Montrose.

Mr. and Mrs. Howard WRIGHT of Ft. Madison have a son born at Sacred Heart Hospital.

Mr. and Mrs. Ed MOORE a son born in Keokuk hospital.

Miss Lillian FROST married Benton HANCOCK at West Point, In., 1 June 1929. Bride is second daughter of Mr. and Mrs. D.A. FROST of Ft.Madison, groom is the only son of Mr. and Mrs. E.H. HANCOCK of this place. Will live in Chicago.

Mr. and Mrs. Wm. SHAW a son born last Friday.

W. H. PATTON, an old time resident of Montrose, died at Port Townsend, Wa.

James WRIGHT, an old resident of Montrose, died at his daughters in Santa Monica, Ca. He will be buried in Montrose, beside his mother.

Daniel SOUTH, born 15 July 1850, at Charleston, died 20 June 1929. Life time resident of Lee county. Leaves one brother, W.H. SOUTH of Ft. Madison. Buried Charleston.

3 July 1929

Mrs. Margaret GALLOWAY PHILP, died at her home near Montrose, Sunday. She was born 22 June 1824 in Edinborough, Scotland and came with her parents, Alex and Ellen GALLOWAY in 1859. The remainder of her life has been spent on a farm near Montrose. She married Captain John PHILP, 5 October 1867, at Montrose. They had six children. Her husband preceded her in death 47 years ago. Leaves children; J.E. PHILP and Mrs. John FRUEHLING of Montrose, Allan and Ralph PHILP of Keokuk, and Mrs. William St.Ores of Santa Rose, Ca. One son Robert, preceded her. (she was 105 years old?)

Joe CHOULET and children; Mary and Maxine, drove to Warsaw Monday to attend the funeral of the former’s mother, who died at that place last Saturday.

Miss Helen Betty PRICE, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E.T.PRICE of Montrose, married James V. METZINGER of Montrose.

James VERMAZEN, a resident of Lee county for many years, died 29 August 1929. He was born in Amsterdam, Holland, 3 March 1847 and came with his family at age of nine, settled in Lee county and spent the rest of his life here. He was the youngest of six sons of Art and Birdie VERMAZEN, all of whom have preceded him in death. Leaves five sons and two daughters; Archie of Hanford, Ca., Mrs. E.H FARRELL and Charles of San Pedro, Ca., Mrs. Clarence MULLIKIN, Edward, and Louis, all of Montrose, and William of Gregory, Missouri. Buried Charleston.

James MORGAN, died at his home here Tuesday. He was born 18 February 1858 in Tennessee. Leaves wife and two brothers; Dan MORGAN, of Denver, Co. and Max MORGAN of Brookfield, Missouri. Buried Oakland cemetery in Ft.Madison.

Miss Garnet MCCANN, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William MCCANN, married Thomas CLENDENEN, son of Mr. and Mrs. William CLENDENEN of Troy, Iowa, at Ft. Madison.

Henry REED, formerly of this city, died in a Peoria hospital, Monday. He was born in Jefferson Twp., the son of Marrick and Margaret Allison REED. Survived by wife, three brothers and two sisters, John REED of St .Paul, Ed of St. Louis, and Charles REED of Montrose, Mrs. Rosa REED of New London, and Mrs. Sadie LEACH of St. Louis.

Mrs. Mary SNYDER, who died at Quincy, Sunday morning, was brought here Tuesday and buried in Montrose. Survived by daughter, Mrs. Minnie REDDIG

William B. PATTEN, former Montrose citizen, who died 16 June 1929, in Southern, Id. He was buried in Nampa, Id. Survived by wife who was formerly Mrs. Sarah REDMON, one son and three daughters. He was the son of one of the earliest families in Montrose, Captain PATTEN, well known steamboat man, and the gentile, lovable Grandma PATTEN. His first wife was Carrie HILL. He is the last of the PATTEN brothers who were all prominent in Montrose affairs in early days.

Mr. and Mrs. Albert MARSHALL, a new girl born 12 October 1929.

John Samuel YOUNKIN, twelve year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Curtis YOUNKIN, died in Denver, Co. Saturday. He was born 24 February 1917 in Montrose. Survived by parents, three sisters, Helen, Mary, and Betty Lou, one brother, Robert, his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. John MEGCHELSEN.

Road 161 is now open to Mt .Pleasant.

Miss Helen BOYLE, married Raymond L. LEMATTY, both of Montrose, last Wednesday in Canton, Illinois. Bride is the oldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Timothy BOYLE, groom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank LEMATTY. Will live in the Effie LEFEVRE house. ( Spruce and 2nd St.,, N.W. corner, 2 story house.

Mrs. Lisie GRANT died last Saturday. She was born in N.Y. and moved to Montrose with her parents when she was young. Survived by four sisters; Mrs. Emma KNIGHT, Mrs. Etta COLLINS, Mrs. D.D. WILSON and Mrs. Mary FIFER of Burlington. Two brothers; George CRAWFORD, Thomas Ok. Jason CRAWFORD of Kansas City, Missouri. Buried Montrose.

Mrs. Julia A. SLINGERLAND died 2 November 1929 at her home west of Charleston. She was born in Cincinnatti, Ohio, 13 April 1841, the daughter of Jean BAPTISTE and Frances BALLAY DEUMENIL. In May 1853, she came with her parents to Keokuk, then to Charleston. She married John Hazard SLINGERLAND 28 September 1862, he preceded her in May 1926. They had three children, one died quite young, William Carson of Pine Bluff, Wy., and Mrs. Nera May at the home farm. Three brothers; L.V. DEUMENIL of Montrose, M.F. DEUMENIL of Argyle, J.N.DEUMENIL of Keokuk, two sisters; Mrs. Marcia CONRAD of Des Moines and Mrs. Frances WOLFENBARGER of San Francisco. Buried Charleston.

Miss Ida BRADDOCK die4d in San Bernardino, buried Mountain View cemetery.

Mr. and Mrs. Harry PETERSON a new girl, born 4 November 1929. Mrs. PETERSON is former Gerogie PETTY of Montrose.

Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence PHILLIPS, a new girl born 4 November 1929.

Miss Myra REED married Cyril CARPENTER in Keokuk. Bride is daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William REED, groom is son of Mr. and Mrs. W. CARPENTER of Des Moines. Will live in Montrose.

5 December 1929

Mrs. William REED died at her home, 26 November 1929. She was in the neighborhood of 60 years old. Daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles MOON Sr., both of whom are dead. Surviving; three daughters and one son; Mrs. Helen LUNN, who recently moved to Ca., Mrs. Robert KNOBBS and Mrs. Cyril CARPENTER, both of Montrose, Eugene, also of Montrose, one grandson, Robert KNOBBS. Four brothers; Charles MOON of Montrose, William MOON of SanDiego, Ca., Dr. Roy MOON and E.G. MOON of Ottumwa, one sister, Mrs. Nellie AUWAERTER is dead as is one brother, Alf MOON.

26 December 1929

Montrose has suffered a great loss in the death of Mrs. G.H. DUTY, who was our oldest native born resident, having been born in Montrose 27 August 1853.
