Montrose has 185 residences and 583 people, 31 of its houses shelter only one occupant each, while 42 have one couple residing in them. Every house in town is occupied and twenty more could be used if we only had them. Our population is limited by our number of dwellings, and rent is not high enough to justify putting up new buildings. The only thing that will make the town grow larger is deaths or weddings as practically all these single people own their homes. We have 29 widows, a few of whom are over 80 but most of them are middle aged and full of life. We have six old bachelors and eight old maids. We mean by that that they are over thirty and have never married. Several of these are fairly well fixed in this world’s goods and are only waiting till the lucky partners come along to share with them their happy homes.

9 April 1925
The death of Samuel CHEESEMAN removes one of our oldest, native born citizens, he having been born here in the Fall of 1858. His father was Mike CHEESEMAN, an old stage driver and steamboat mate. His mother was Paulina HARMON CHEESEMAN, daughter of Old Lady HARMON, as she was called. What schooling he had, he received at the Montrose School. Sam was never very strong on school. About 1870, his father bought the six lots now occupied by Mr. MEAD and built a small house and here Sam grew up to manhood. Gosling GREEN was then an oak heavy woods, not a tree being cut at that time. No boy had a happier childhood or more pleasing conditions, because the writer shared them with him and knows whereof he speaks. He was never at home much after his mother died, being engaged in railroad work all over the country. He was not careful of his health and disease laid its heavy hand upon him and the last years of his life were only pain and suffering. It was a relief for him when the death angel finally called him home. He has three living relatives, an uncle, Will ADAMS, of Galland, an aunt, Mrs. BOND at Keokuk, a cousin, Dick MARSHALL also of Keokuk, who was present at the funeral service which was held at the Montrose cemetery.

The oldest bell in town is the one used by the Episcopalians, which was donated to them by the church at Keokuk when they bought a larger bell about the year 1867. It was placed on a frame at the Methodist church under an agreement with that congregation that when the Episcopalians completed their church in 1878, the bell with its frame was moved over and located on the south side of the building. The tower which now houses the bell was built about twenty years ago. The second oldest bell is the Presbyterian. It was purchased about 1870. Previous to that time a unique method had been used to call the people to worship,. In the north east corner of the building about six feet from the ground, an iron bar had been driven from which was suspended a large iron triangle the sides of which were about two feet. A piece of iron bar was used to pound this triangle making a noise that could be heard all over town and reminding the people that it was time to worship. The Methodist bell was purchased about 1874 and was placed on a frame outside the church till the vestibule of the original church was built it, was placed in its present position. The Nazarene bell was purchased when the church was erected about fifteen years ago. The L.D.S. and the Catholic churches here do not use a bell. The school bell was purchased about 1894, replacing an iron bell which had been used up to that time.
