TO THE PEOPLE OF MONTROSE

THE REPORT IS OUT THAT I, ALBERT VANAUSDALL JR. HAD TO CLOSE MY GARAGE ON THE ACCOUNT OF BOOT LEGGING, AND I WANT THE PEOPLE OF MONTRTOSE TO KNOW THAT NO SUCH THING EVER OCCURRED IN MY GARAGE AND THAT I AM A MAN WHO WOULD DO ANYTHING TO HELP PUT BOOT LEGGING OUT OT BUSINESS, INSTEAD OF RUNNING A PLACE, AND WISH THAT WHO EVER STARTED SUCH A RUMOR WOULD PLEASE MAKE WRONGS RIGHT. AND THAT THE GARAGE WAS NOT CLOSED BY ANY ONE BUT MYSELF.

18 January 1923

Wm. DYE, well known resident of Jefferson Twp. where he had lived for the past ten years, died 10 January 1923, at age of 77. He was born in Oh. 4 August 1844 and the family came here some ten years ago. Leaves; wife, Mrs. Clara DYE, five sons; Ira, Moses and James of Montrose, John of Viele and William of Independence, Iowa, four daughters; Cora and Eliz at home, Eva GOLDSMITH of Ft. Madison, Fern CLOUD of Montrose, two brothers; Moses of Ft. Madison, James DYE of Moline, Illinois. One brother, J. died at Mulvane, Kansas. ( I remember Jim DYE quite well, he was the janitor at the school when I was in school there)

Mr. and Mrs. Wayne GEE have a new girl.

Mr. and Mrs. Louis WESTERMEYER of Charleston, have a new girl, born 1 January.

Lucy A. UTLEY was born in Harrodsburg, Ky., 25 January 1840 and died 15 January 1923. She married Charles W. SACKMAN 2 February 1860 at Montrose, Iowa. They had eight children, three of whom survive; Mrs. Mary DOBSON, Mrs. Arvilla COOVERT and Mr. Benj. SACKMAN. There was quite a write up in the paper when this happened.

Robert Sidney SACKMAN, son of Mr. and Mrs. Benj SACKMAN was born at Montrose 19 February 1920, died 15 January 1923. He is survived by parents and three brothers. The double funeral was conducted by Rev. HUGHES at the Methodist church Wednesday. The choir was composed of Joseph REED, Emil WAHRER, Mrs. Ed HANCOCK, Miss M. O. ELLIS and Mrs. BOWEN at the piano. Six grandsons, namely, Archie and Virgil COOVERT, Joe SOBSON, Otis and Robert SACKMAN, and Ralph DOBSON acted as the pall bearers for Mrs. SACKMAN. Four boys, Milton BOWEN, Thos KNOBBS, Eughen ALLEN, and Earl DAVIS acted as pallbearers for little Robert SACKMAN. (Ralph DOBSON was my father, Joe DOBSON was the fire chief in Keokuk for quite a few years, his grandson Reinie, is now Chief of Police)

Russell HANCOCK, wife and little baby were over Sunday visitors at the Albert VANAUSDALL home at Bellmont. ( I wonder what happened to the girl born earlier and when was this one born? Must be Don who died out in Ca. a few years ago.

Mrs. Eugene REEVES died Saturday at the home of her daughter, Mrs. James M. FULTON in Keokuk. She was a native of Montrose and will be buried there. Born Ida F. SINGER 20 February 1856 in Montrose. Married 5 September 1877 to Eugene REEVES. Had two children; one son Emerson, dying several years ago, one daughter, Florence; Mrs. James FULTON, two grandchildren, James M. Jr. and Florence FULTON, besides her husband, who are left to mourn. Also three sisters and two brothers.

08 February 1923

Mr. and Mrs. C. W. LEEPER, a son born 5 February 1923.

Mr. and Mrs. Ralph HARMON nee Sallie WHITNEY of Centerville, Iowa, have a new son born 31 January 1923. They named him John Scott HARMON.

Mr. and Mrs. Henry REUTHER of Rt. 2 have a new son born 31 January 1923.

Mrs Alice BINDEWALD received a message from Mr. and Mrs. Earnest STANLEY of Bettendorf announcing the birth of a daughter.

Daniel MILES, son Denn and Polly MILES was born in Montrose 6 September 1850 and died 7 February 1923. Survived by one brother; Dennis MILES of Oakville, Iowa, two nieces and one nephew. Buried New Boston cemetery.

This was just advertising different business.’ The one I remember so well was Off’s Bakery. When I was a kid and lived at Gallend, there was a woman that came around selling rolls, bread etc., for 5 cents a package, boy were they good. I remember the caramel ones so well.

Mr. and Mrs. F. P. DAVIS has a new girl, born 28 February 1923.

Mrs. Elizabeth REIMBOLD, wife of Harold P. REIMBOLD, died at her home in Nauvoo, Illinois 20 February 1923. Mary Elizabeth LAWS, only daughter of J. W. and Lulu Myers LAWS, was born in Princeton, Missouri, 14 September 1896. At an early age she went to Montrose, Iowa. She was married 7 June 1922 to Harold P. REIMBOLD of Nauvoo, Illinois at Burlington, Iowa. Surviving husband, mother, grandmother, Mrs. Elizabeth MEYERS of Montrose. She was buried in the silk wedding dress of her great grandmother, which she wore at her own wedding last June. The remains were conveyed to the new cemetery.

Mr. and Mrs. Ralph HUNTER of Earlham, Iowa have a new son born 18 February 1923. Mrs. HUNTER is the former Nellie KERR of Montrose.

A letter from Miss Ida BRADDOCK of Highland, Ca. gives information of the death of Mr. Kingston NETHERWAY, the husband of Gula BRADDOCK, who passed away some years ago. There were two children, the son, a young man who lost his life in the war and a daughter, Lucile, left to mourn alone.

Mr. and Mrs. Oscar OWENS of Sandusky, a new girl.

Miss Hannah CRAWFORD was born in N. Y., 22 January 1872 and died at the family home on 27 February 1923. She came with parents 45 years ago and has been here since. Leaves; mother, Mrs. Charity CRAWFORD, six sisters; Mrs. Emma KNIGHT, Mrs. S. L. COLLINS, Mrs. Lyle GRANT of Montrose, Mrs. Harry BEODOW of Kansas City, Mrs. Mary FIFER of Burlington , and Mrs. E. D. WILSON of Denmark and two brothers; George of ? Thomas, Ok. And Jason of Kansas City. Buried Montrose cemetery.

15 March 1923

Joseph Bertram MILES, one of the most progressive and well known Lee County farmers, died at his home near New Boston last Mon. He was born in this county, 1 August 1860. Leaves wife, Julia, and the following children; Mrs. W. L. HOLLIDAY, and Miss Louise MILES of Ft. Madison and Joseph MILES of New Boston, brothers; P. Y. MILES of Corydon, Iowa. Mrs. John HOPP of Montrose and Mrs. Fannie HOLMES of Burlingon, three grandchildren. Buried New Boston cemetery.

Mrs. George JOHNSON, whose death occurred last sat. In St. Joseph’s hospital , was buried in Galland cemetery. Pearl Ruby SILVERS was burn on 30 April 1883 near Montrose . She married George JOHSON 29 April 1911 and had eight children, three have died, Gladys, Jessie and Marvin, Living; Helen, Irene, Vada, Chester, and Iola. Ruby BROWN a daughter by a former marriage also survives her , together with her husband, two sisters Mrs.? JOHSON of Galland, and Mr. and Mrs. Wm Wilson or Montrose, three brothers, Clarence , Frank , and Orison also her parents, MR. and Mrs. George SILVERS of Montrose. One sister preceded her; Mrs. Annie? Baker in 1910.

22 Mar. 1923

Miss Hannah R. GRAHAM was born 10 June 1844 at Kirkland, In. At the age of eight, she came with her parents to Iowa and settled in Sandusky . She married William T. UTLEY 2 Nov. 1869 and had five children, all of whom survive; Mrs. Anna HANEY of Creston, Iowa. Mrs. George McCRARY, of Springfield, Mo., Mr. Roland UTLEY of Myrtle, Mo., Mr. Brogan UTLEY, Grand Mere Canada, and Mr. Robert UTLEY of Keokuk. Her husband, Wm. T. UTLEY died about two years ago. She died at home of her son, Robert in Keokuk 16 Mar. 1923. VANAUSDOLL boys were pall bearers. Buried in Sandusky cemetery.

Mr. and Mrs. McELHANY are parents of a boy, born 22 Mar. 1923. Mrs. McELHANY is the daughter of Mrs. Harriet GLASSFORD. The McELHANY”S live in Chicago.

The following notice appeared in the Daily Gate City of Mar. 22 1873. CARPENTER-HAMLET;At the residence or Mr. and Mrs. Charles RIPLEY, corner 13th and Fulton streets on Thurs. Mar. 20, by Rev. W.G.CRAIG, Mr. John R. CARPENTER, of the U.S. corps of Engineers , to Miss Fannie HAMLET, of this city. Today they celebrate their 50 years. Mrs. Julia STOWE surprised them with a big three tiered white fruit cake, iced in white. Mrs. STOWE is 88 now, and it was she who baked the CARPENTERS wedding cake 50 years ago. She was born in Montrose and he was born in Jamaica, Long Island, N. Y. Keokuk has been their home since being married.

Boy Scouts is being organized in Montrose.

Mr. and Mrs. Emil BALL of Charleston, a new son 20 March 1923.

Mrs. H. I. HENTZEL, died Sunday and was buried in the Donnellson cemetery. She was the mother of Mrs. John WARDLOW.

Mr. Joel AMES died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. NEWBERRY at Argyle. Obit next week.

Mr. and Mrs. Leo PFLIGERSTOFER have a new son born 30 March 1923.

12 April 1923

Miss May PHILP, daughter of Andrew PHILP, died Monday and was buried in Sandusky cemetery on Wednesday.

Mrs. John WARDLOW has been at Donnellson for the past two weeks. She assisted in the care of her mother, who was sick, dying Sunday 1 April. Her father was sick also, she remained to care for him. Mr. HENTZEL died 8 April.

Beulah Beatrice BREWER was born at Montrose 4 May 1913 and died 2 April 1923 at the age of 9. Leaves her parents; Mr. and Mrs. L.A. BREWER and the following brothers and sisters; Alice, Minnie, Anna, Alvin, Earl, Esther and John, all at home except Alice and Anna, who make their home in Keokuk. Two sisters. Florence and Lillian, died some years ago. Buried Anderson cemetery.

19 April 1923

Mrs. Grace WILLIAMS, daughter of Mrs. Lettie Johnesse MCFADDEN, as she was returning from an Easter service, and just as she alighted from a street car, was struck and killed by an auto, driven by a drunken Italian. Those friends who knew Mrs. MCFADDEN here, that were able to attend the funeral services were, Miss Bessie SLOANAKER, Mrs. Hattie FIFER, Mrs. Ida BEEMER and Mrs. Minnie ELLIS. The sacred remains were laid to rest in the cemetery at Bremerton where Miss MCFADDEN’S home is. Mrs. WILLIAMS leaves four children, three of whom her mother Mrs. MCFADDEN will take and bring up. Mrs. MCFADDEN was the oldest in her family, and lost her mother when the family needed a mother, which place she took and filled well. Some years later, she married and reared a family of five. Her husband has become an invalid and upon her capable and practiced shoulder, along with the cares already there, she places this added weight.

H. L. or I., HENTZEL died 8 April. Buried Donnellson cemetery. He was born near Bledeh Hanover Germany 31 March 1845 and moved to America with his parents at the age of 9 and located at Warren, Iowa. In 1870, he married Martha E. MILLER at Burlington, she died seven years ago. The children; Henry, deceased, Edward C. and Mrs. Mattie WALLINGFORD of this city, Mrs. Mary WARDLOW, Montrose, Ervin of Keokuk and Aaron, New Boston. In 1899, the family moved to Donnellson where he was engaged in the shoe business.

Joel AMES a veteran of the Civil War, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Emma L. NEWBERRY of Argyle, 4 April 1923. He was the son of Loring and Elmira AMES, and was born near Canton, Hancock County Illinois, 23 February 1844. Enlisted in Co. G. 31st Illinois infantry and joined SHERMANS army at Macon, Georgia and was with Sherman on his famous march to the sea and continued with the army until he was honorably discharged 19 July 1865. Married 21 June 1866 to Carentha C. BANKS, who preceded him in death a few months. Had eight children, three of whom survive; Mrs. Emma L. NEWBERRY of Argyle, Dr. H. B. AMES of Alva, Oklahoma, and Joseph M. of Raton, N. M. Nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Funeral services at Montrose and buried Montrose cemetery.

Catherine DAVIS, married Orion H. RHOADES, 11 April 1923, at her mothers home; Mrs. Sallie DAVIS. Groom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Elisha RHOADES of Sandusky. He was a volunteer with the first troops sent overseas in 1917 and was wounded at Chateau-Thiery. Will live two miles N. W. of Sandusky.

Mr. Curtis CLOUD is the owner of a Cadillac car, which he purchased recently.

Maynard JOHNSON and wife of Charleston, a son born at Graham hospital.

Wm. RENZ and wife of Charleston, a daughter, born 10 April.

Rex WILCOX and Miss Harriet FITZPATRICK married on Wednesday in Ft. Madison.

Wm. A. LONGSTRETH, son of Isaac and Janisa LONGSTRETH, was born in Perry Co. Pa., 31 March 1846 and died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. G. W. BARBER, 14 April 1923. His parents came to Iowa when he was six months old and settled in Sweetland, Muscatine Co. There he married Martha M. GILBERT, who preceded him by a few months. They had one child, Mrs. G. W. BARBER, wife of Rev. G. W. BARBER, pastor of the M. E. church of Stockport, Iowa. He settled on his father’s farm until 1891 when he moved to Knoxville, Iowa then in 1907, he moved to Bussey, Iowa. For the past few years, he has made his home with his daughter. Buried in Montrose by his wife, who died in 1921.

Mr. and Mrs. Ed VERMAZEN a son born 12 May.

This issue has a delinquent motor vehicle list and dog list. Both lists are huge. Some people will remember that you used to have to pay taxes on every dog that you owned. We paid $1.00 a year per dog. They done away with that here in Kansas some time in the late 60’s or early 70’s. For those of you that don’t remember, we used to pay tax on sewing machines, stoves that were freestanding, I don’t remember of anything else but I am sure there was.

Galland school closes, evidently just for the summer, with three boys and two girls who have finished the prescribed course for the eighth grade and are ready for high school. This school is situated near the spot where the first school building was erected, in the 1830 decade in the state of Iowa, by Dr. Galland, after whom the village and station are named. The head of the article shows a picture of the old building.

Mrs. J. M. AUWAERTER, of Jefferson Twp. died 25 May 1923 at Rochester, Mn. Helen Almira MOON was born 16 October 1866, daughter of Charles P. and Almira Griswold MOON and spent her entire life in Jefferson Twp. On 17 January 1900, she married John M. AUWAERTER, who survives together with two sons, Harry and Roy, a sister, Mrs. May REED, of Montrose, five brothers. William of SanDiego, Ca. Roy of Attica, Iowa, Edwin of Ottumwa, and Charles of Montrose. Buried Oakland cemetery, Ft. Madison.

A short Memorial service will be held at the grave of the late Mr. J. B. WORDEN in the Montrose cemetery, Friday. At that time the sacred ashes of Mrs. WORDEN will be placed in the grave with her husband. All the friends are requested to attend.

Mrs. F. F. SMITH has received word of the death of her niece; Mrs. Gladys STEPHENS ROESSNER of Denver, Co., only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George STEPHENS. Leaves parents, a brother Henry, one son Jack.

Otto KEMPKAS and wife a son born on Sunday.

Charles DERR and Miss Tottie ROE married Thursday at Keokuk.

Cordelia Ann MANNING, wife of Joseph MANNING was born 13 April 1843, died at her home in Lancaster, Missouri, 30 June 1923. Buried I. O. O. F. cemetery.

Miss Lena RUDD and Mr. Emmett HARDEN married 27 June at Ft. Madison.

12 July 1923

Mr. and Mrs. L. C. BERRYHILL of Ft. Morgan, Co., a son. Mother was former Mildred VERMAZEN.

19 July 1923

Late last Friday, Frank WEISMANN, was on his way out of Keokuk, and overtaking Mr. J. P. KENNEDY on the top of Anschutz’s hill, turned out to pass him. He was going too fast to make the turn back into the road, at any rate his car swerved just ahead of the KENNEDY car and turned over, killing him instantly.

George PRESTON drowned in the Linger Longer Beach(could be around Ft.Madison) Leaves a wife, he had married less than two years ago.

Miss Eva I. ELEFSON of Lamoni, Iowa, married Orval T. MILLER in Nauvoo, Illinios. Will live on a farm near Montrose.

Matthew LEFEVRE, died at his home Wednesday.

Mr. and Mrs. Carson SMITH a son born 8 July 1923.

Mr. and Mrs. ALLEN, a daughter, born 19 July 1923.

Herbert MEGCHELSEN died Wednesday.

Matthew Scovill LEFEVRE was born 28 August 1885 in the home where he died 25 July 1923. He was the youngest child of Andrew and Letta LEFEVRE. His mother died last September. He married Miss Effie KERR, 20 May 1916. Surviving, wife, father, one sister, Mrs. John C. FRY of Keokuk, one brother, Louis of Spokane, Washington. Last Fall while picking apples, he fell and injured his spine. Buried Montrose.

Herbert John MEGCELSEN was born 17 November 1889, the son of John and Mary WRIGHT MEGCHELSEN, and was raised in this county. Married 22 June 1916 to Florence OTTOWA of Ft. Madison. Had three children, all of whom survive; Mary Frances, aged 6, Harriett, aged 3, and David, aged 6 weeks, his parents, of Montrose, one brother, Charles and six sisters, Mrs. Curtis YOUNKIN, of Montrose, Mrs. D.A. SAMPSON and Mrs. Maurice COLE of Detroit, Mi. Miss Ruth, Santa Barbara, Ca. Miss Marian and Miss Jean both of Montrose.

Ina Mae HEINTZ, wife of Paul HEINTZ and eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George DAVIS, was born in Montrose, Iowa, 1 September 1900, died 30 July 1923. Besides the husband, parents, (don’t find any more on this article)

A young man raised in Montrose, took a wife at the home of Mrs. F. O. NELSON, of Newton, Iowa E.A. SINGER, brother of Mrs. NELSON, married Miss Mabel KROTZ 9 September 1923. Bride is the daughter of Mrs. James KROTZ of Oxford. Groom is cabinet maker in Iowa City.

Galland school opens again.

Miss Louise BLAKEMORE married Aaron BECKER, 5 September at the Presbyterian manse. Wedding supper was served at the bride’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. C.E. BLAKEMORE on the Johnson street road. Will live in Keokuk this winter.

A farewell party was held for Mr. and Mrs. James CALE. Didn’t say where they were going.

27 September 1923

Mr. Charley JOHNSON started out to get his bride-to-be, Miss Jennie TROSLE, but had a bit of tough luck with muddy roads. Was to be married on Thursday, but it was Saturday when they got there.

Mr. and Mrs. L. E. CLARK of Chicago, have a new daughter, born last Sunday. The baby is the great- grandchild of Mrs. Harriot GLASSFORD.

04 October 1923

Rev. and Mrs. J. Glen SCHILLERSTROM have a new son, born last week.

There was a camp of Mexicans down on the Tesson apple orchard site last Sunday night and Monday morning there was a little stranger came to one of the families, Dr. BUCK was called.

Alexander ALLISON was buried Wednesday at Montrose. He died 24 September. He was born near Montrose 9 June 1859, the son of Ross and Fidelis ALLISON. He married Miss Sophia ROESCH 25 October 1894 in Lebanon, Illinois. Survived by wife, one brother, Samuel. Buried Montrose.

11 October 1923

There was a double wedding, not sure I can see it all. The two sons of Mr. and Mrs. Edward WRIGHT. Wilma V. HANCOCK, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. HANCOCK of Summitville. Wilma married Lloyd WRIGHT, Miss Esther M. COLEMAN of Kansas City, Missouri married Harold Reed WRIGHT of Kansas City, Missouri.

Mrs. Lavinia COYNE died at her home in Jefferson Twp. 4 October 1923. She was a pioneer of Lee County. Lived more than 65 years on the same homestead. Lavinia OBERLY was born at Bethel 20 July 1826, the daughter of Andrew and Susanna OBERLY. She came to Iowa in 1846, the year Iowa became a statehood, with her parents. She married William COYNE, he died 48 years ago. Three sons survive; William of Redding, Ca. Frank and Andrew of ( rest of article is missing)

Miss Mae MARSHALL, youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John MARSHALL of Montrose and Mr. Raymond JOHNSON, youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. H. B. JOHNSON of Warsaw, Illinois were married in Carthage, Illinois. Will live in Warsaw.

After years of waiting, till all things were ready, Miss Lida LAMBERT has surrendered to the bonds of matrimony. Just how the story goes, we are not fully enough informed to tell it but back in their younger lives, Miss LAMBERT and Mr. RITZ were lovers. For some reason, known only to themselves, and which is nobody’s business but theirs, there were lines crossed and the wedding was deferred. But time, which cures so many of our ills, kept at work and this very worthy couple were finally happily united in wedlock and they will go out west where Mr. RITZ’S health is much better than it is here.

Mr. Fredrick CALE died Thursday. He was born 3 April, 1872 in Jefferson Twp. He married Miss Mary DEVORE and had two children; Mabel, now Mrs. Clayton CLOUD of Montrose, and Robert CALE of Davenport. In 1811(must mean 1911) he married Miss Effie PEZLEY of Charleston, who with four small children, survive, Genevive, Chas, Ruby, and Harold. One child died in infancy. Brothers and sisters; Frank, John and Robert, all of Davenport. Alfred and Effie CALE of New Boston, and Mrs. Eliza CLOUD of Montrose. Buried Montrose.

22 November 1923

Mr. James PARKAS of Burlington and Miss Ethel MARSHALL of Montrose married at Hannibal, Missouri. Will live in Burlington.

13 December 1923

Lucile a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Keeler HORNE, passed away. Buried Montrose cemetery.

John BLAKESLEE of Philadelphia was electrocuted at work. His son Ernest, who worked there, saw the accident, but could not help. The family consists of parents, three daughters and four sons. One son, Paul lives in Keokuk, one daughter in Detroit, the others are in Philadelphia.

27 December 1923

David HOUGHTON, a well known citizen and civil war veteran of Montrose, died at his home in that city 23 December 1923. He was born in Orange county, Maine, 23 October 1840. When a young man, he came west and settled in Montrose. In 1862, he enlisted in Keokuk in Co. B. 17th Iowa infantry and served to the end. He was a prisoner in Andersonville and other confederate prisons. When he returned to Montrose, he went into the barber business until 1918. He married 11 July 1866 to Mary Ann RAY, who survives him. Except for his wife, there are no other near relatives except nephews and nieces.
