Mrs. William H. HANCOCK, died at home of her daughter, Mrs. Myrtle BATTICE, in Chicago 19 December 1919 ( must mean 1918). She was born and lived most of her life in Lee. Co. Iowa. She was buried at Donnellson, Iowa. She was born Miss Greta Anna HAMILTON, daughter of the late William and Martha HAMILTON in Charleston, Iowa 6 October 1843. Survived by husband and five children, Clyde G. of Keokuk, Mrs. Effie WAGNER of Montrose, Mrs. BATTICE of Chicago and Mrs. Maud CASPER of Donnellson, one son, Edwin Ross, died at age 4. A brother Charles of Guthrie, Oklahoma, sister Mrs. A.J.APPLEGATE of Old Monroe, Missouri.

Mrs. Essie Laura (CASSIDY) SPROTT born 17 July 1867, near Donnellson, Iowa. She died 28 December 1818 at Montrose. She married 4 June 1892 to John SPROTT and had five children, Walter SPROTT, Mrs. Mildred CANFIELD, of Davenport, Clarence SPROTT in France, John Jr. and Elsie at home. Surviving besides husband and children, her mother, Mrs. James CASSIDY, three brothers, Wm. of Ft. Madison, John of Donnellson, and Geo. Of Ne., one sister, Mrs. Nettie LUNDQUIST of S.D.

E. B CRANE and family, received a telegram telling them their son, William CRANE had died in France of Pneumonia, on 21 December 1918.

Miss Dorothy CHRISTENSEN was born in Montrose, Iowa 8 November 1893 and died 31 December 1918 in Oakdale, Iowa. Surviving: her mother, two brothers and two sisters. Funeral took place at the home in Montrose.

16 January 1919

Arlie BARNES, son of Mr. and Mrs. Morgan BARNES and Miss Opal BARNES, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Hrnry BARNES of Keokuk, were married Sat. Mr. BARNES is a prosperous farmer at Charleston.

Mr. and Mrs. Ralph CURTIS have a new son, Glen William CURTIS, born 12 January 1919

Charles PEZLEY and wife of Charleston, are parents of a boy born 13 January/.

Rev.DUTY was called to Keokuk to conduct the funeral of a Mr. BURGESS who died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. LARSON.

Word received here that George H. LIGHT died in Hugo, Co. He was 69, and had resided in this community for nearly forty years. He married Mary BURLEY at Montrose and had three children. He is survived by wife, two daughters, Mrs. Frank ECHTERNACHT of Genoa, Co. and Mrs. Fred BRUENINGEN of Hastings. The body was shipped to Hastings where the funeral was held at the home of his daughter on Fri. Buried Wood River cemetery.

30 January 1919

Sadie May CARNES was born 28 October 1865 at Whiteley, Pa. While still little, her parents moved to Ringgold County, Iowa where she lived till she married Harry CARNES 14 Nov. 1883. In the Fall they moved to Iowa City, Iowa where he attended med school. At his graduation, they moved to Montrose. After he died, she went to Urbana, Illinois. The first of Nov. her daughter, Mrs. George KENNEDY, brought her back to Montrose. Other survivers are Mrs. Alan ARTS, and John Kenneth CARNES. Funeral held at KENNEDY home.

David WAREHIME died at the family home in Wever, Iowa 26 January 1919 at age 62. Leaves wife, and six daughters: Mrs. Albert CALE, of Montrose, Mrs. George BERNHARDT, and Mrs. David KUDEBEH of Donnellson, Nola and Jennie WAREHIME at home, Mrs. Leo GELSEN, an adopted daughter of Ft Madison. Buried Oakland cemetery.

Miss Osa McCANN married Loren KNOBBS, both of this place. Married at the Cath. Parsonage in Keokuk, Iowa. Groom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph KNOBBS. He has the distinction of being the first returned soldier from Montrose to take unto himself a wife.

The papers are full of war news and letters from the “boys”, I think every Montrose boy has had a letter in the paper.

13 February 1919

Anna GERTRUDE, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. S.P. JOHNSON, died at the home near Summitville, Iowa 10 February. She was born 1 January 1890 at Galland. Survived by parents and three brothers: Morton P. of Summitville, William and Frederick of Keokuk. Buried at Galland cemetery.

Miss Emmaline HAMILTON died Wed. at the home of Mrs. Frank SMITH in Burlington.

Miss Verna Irene CONNER, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. T.N.CONNER, married Louis Roland WAHRER, will live in Montrose.

Laura L. COOPER was born in Montrose, 19 July 1854. Married Mr. A.E. KIEL 17 March 1881. They had one daughter, Mrs. Zeta KIEL JOHNSON. Mrs. KIEL died at the home of her daughter in Des Moines, Iowa 25 February 1919. Buried in Montrose cemetery.

Miss Emmaline THOMPSON HAMILTON, another one of Montrose’s old citizens passed away at the home of her niece, Mrs. F.F. SMITH, of Burlington, Iowa 5 March 1919. She was born at Pleasant Ridge, Iowa in 1847 and came to Montrose in 1868, three years after the close of the Civil War. She was the daughter of George and Susan HAMILTON and has lived here for 50 years. Surviving are all nieces: Mrs. Emma FAIRBANKS, of Norfolk, Nebraska, Mrs. Sina SMITH of Burlington, Iowa, Mrs. Nellie COX, of St Anthony, Idaho, Mrs Allie SCOTT of Keokuk, Iowa, Miss Edna WOODS, Springfield, Illinois and Sallie WHITNEY of Centerville, Iowa, one nephew, George SKIPHENS, Denver, Colorado. Funeral was held at Montrose at the home of Mrs. Jeanette HAMILTON. Buried Montrose cemetery.

Ralph GILMAN, son of Brock GILMAN of this place, married Mildred BAILEYm daughter of Mrs. Minnie BAILEY, of Sandusky. Will live in Montrose, at the grooms father’s.

Mr. and Mrs. Warren KNIGHT of Industry, Illinois have a new boy born 10 March 1919. Mr. KNIGHT just returned from France, and is at the Ft.Des Moines hospital recuperating from two attacks of Pneumonia and an operation for appendicitis while in France.

James HANEY celebrated his 100th birthday at Sandusky, Iowa. He was the oldest son of John and Jane HANEY. Born in the County of Autrim, Ireland, on the 8 March 1819. His father was a blacksmith. He was six when the family came to America and settled in Canada. His first work was rafting square timbers down the St. Lawrence river, for export, and he kept at this for nine years. He married Mary Abigal ELIJAH on Christmas day 1842. Shortly after they went to Youk Town, N.Y. where he farmed. They moved to Rockford, Penn. La Salle, and Pontiac, Illinois, where their children were all born. Out of their family of 15, there are only three living, William HANEY of Summitville, Mrs. Sarah Ann ANDREWS of Keokuk, Iowa, Mrs. Emma FOWLER of Sandusky., While living in Pontiac, Illinois, the Civil War broke out and he enlisted in the 39th Illinois Infantry, which was in the Eastern department. A few of the battles he was in: Winchester, Gettysburg, Antiock, Antetim, Bulls Run, Seven days in the Wilderness and Richmond. He was wounded in the conflict at Derbytown Road. A few years later, he with his family moved to Iowa when the Canal was started. The Des Moines Rapids Canal, as he calls it is now at the bottom of Lake Keokuk. His wife died about 31 years ago. One of the great grandchildren has a birthday on the same as his, Mabel FOWLER, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jesse FOWLER of Moline, Illinois. He is a member of G.A.R. Belnap Post at Keokuk. Hr. HANEY’s two surviving sister’s Mrs. Mary Lee and Mrs. Agnes JARVIS of Chana, Illinois, were present.

The remains of the infant child of Mr. and Mrs. SHAW was brought here from Keokuk Tuesday and interred in Montrose cemetery.

While the body of Grandma NEWHOUSE, who passed away Saturday, lay in state at her home, the roof caught fire from a spark, and it was with prompt and quick action of the fire laddies that the home was saved.

Adelpha BLACKSTEN was born in 1841, 14 February in Parksburg, Va. She came to Iowa with the family of Isaac McCLASKY, a Methodist minister when she was a girl. Lived Ft .Madison. Afterwards, she lived with the family of a Mr. DAVIS until her marriage to Peter WILSON in the year of 1867. Two children were born to them; William WILSON, of Montrose, and Mrs. Rena WIDOWS of Olewine, Iowa. Mr. WILSON died in 1872. She then married John NEWHOUSE and had four children, one daughter who died in childhood, three sons; Charles Ft.Madison, Lawrence of Cuba, Missouri and Vance of Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Mr. NEWHOUSE died 22 September 1914. Leaves four sons, one daughter, and one step-daughter of Ft. Madison; Mrs. Inez HENDRICKS. She died at her home on 30 March 1919. Services were held in Montrose.

Michael BAUMERT, Sr., one of Nauvoo’s old settlers, died Thursday. He was born in Kehl, Baden Germany, and came to this country with his parents and three brothers in 1852, and in 1854 they came to Nauvoo. He and his three brothers served in the Civil War. He was 85. He was a stone mason and a bricklayer by trade and many of the substantial brick and stone houses and arch wine cellars in Nauvoo were built by him. During the latter 80’s he helped build the Santa Fe round house and shops in Ft. Madison, being a co-worker of August ELLERMAN and Philip KOCH of that city. In later years, he was engaged in real estate, insurance and loan business. Leaves three daughters and one son; Mrs. Julia BOQUET and Miss Anna BAUMERT of Keokuk, Miss Mary BAUMERT of Nauvoo, and Michael who is publisher of the Nauvoo Independent. Two brothers, John of Coalgate, Oklahoma and George of Ft.Madison.

17 April 1919

Clarence William JACOBS was born 21 November 1878 at Middletown, Iowa. He married Miss Della STONEBURG of Burlington, Iowa, 18 September 1900 and had three children: Lester, Harold, and Margaret, who reside with their mother in Galesburg, Illinois. In 1916, he came to Montrose to live with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Louis JACOBS. In February 1919, he was taken to the state hospital for medical treatment, where he died 12 April 1919. Leaves parents, children, four sisters, Mrs. Louisa BUNKER, Mrs. Nettie BUNKER, Mrs. Eva MOORE and Mrs. Elsie BOHNERT all of Montrose, Iowa. The remains were taken to Burlington where he was buried in the Aspen Grove cemetery.

Mr. and Mrs. David SKINNER are parents of a son, George Edward, born 17 April 1919.

29 May 1919

Miss Nellie M.BECKETT married William H. RICHEY at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. George BECKETT. Last Thursday. Bride is from the Argyle area, groom is from Des Moines Twp.

Glenn MORRISON LINK was born at Montrose 22 July 1903, and died 23 May 1919. Leaves his parents, two sisters, Mrs. Bernice RIMBOLD of Co. and Miss Edith of Montrose, grandparents, aunts and uncles. Buried Montrose cemetery.

Miss Martha DUNCAN married John COONEY of Montrose, at her parents home, in East St.Louis. Bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles DUNCAN. Groom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. James COONEY of this place.

Lois Maxine FRUEHLING, the only child of Mr. and Mrs. John FRUEHLING, was born 27 January 1917 and died 29 May 1919. Buried Montrose cemetery.

26 June 1919

Miss Ethel M. BECKER, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John WARDLOW, was married to William AUWETER in her home Wed. Will live close to Jacob AUWERTER.

Miss Audrey PENEE, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles PENCE of Keokuk, died at her home last Sat. She was 16. Buried Oakland cemetery.

Mr. and Mrs. Alex RIDDLE are parents of a new boy born 16 June.

I find a thank you from the ALLISON’S for their mother, Josephine ALLISON, but no obit.

Miss Ethel HAMILTON, daughter of Scott HAMILTON of New Boston, was married to Jesse V. REDDEN of Argyle 8 June in her home. Will live on a farm near Argyle.

Mrs. Susan HEEVNER born 16 May 1856 in Virginia, Oh. She married Mr. SPEAKE and later Mr. HEEVNER. She died 14 July 1919, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. John REED. Buried Montrose cemetery.

Howard COYNE, son of Frank COYNE, died Sat. on an East bound train, while enroute home. He was born in Lee County in 1882. Leaves father, three brothers; William of Omaha, Ne., Frank and Harry at home, one sister, Mrs. J.M.O’CONNER of chicago.

Mrs. Susana J. HICKMAN died at her home in Pearl River, N.Y. Susana BISHOP was born and lived in Montrose until her marriage to Albert HICKMAN, which they moved to their farm, now owned by William CURTIS. From there they moved to Ottumwa, and from there to N.Y. City, and finally bought a home in Pearl River. She was 73. Leaves husband, three sons and one daughter, a sister Mrs. Sarah HITCHCOCK, Foreman, Ar. Her son William, who was the oldest, died last Fall.

Mr. and Mrs. George SPRING of Ft. Madison have a new daughter, Dorothy May Francis, born 12 July 1919.

At the home of Mrs. E.M. KERR, Wednesday, occurred the wedding of her daughter, Nellie May to Ralph E. HUNTER, of Earlham, Iowa.

Triplets were born to Mr. and Mrs. Will BEATTY, two girls and a boy. The little boy died after a short life.

Mrs. Emma BOWEN ARMENTROUT, daughter of John and Ann B.BOWEN, was born in Montrose, 23 May 1851 and died at her home in Montrose, 6 September 1919. Survived by one brother, P.W. BOWEN, of Montrose, three nieces, Mrs. P.A. BEEBE, Los Angeles, Ca., Miss Grace BOWEN, and Marie L. BOWEN of Montrose, three nephews, Park L. BOWEN, of Montrose, Geo. T. BOWEN of Los Angeles, John H. BOWEN of Detroit, Mi. Buried at Montrose.

Mr. Henry BEARD, a brother of Arnold BEARD, died at Keokuk last Sun. His body was taken to Bonaparte. His daughter, Mrs. SULLIVAN from Mn. Is here.

Samuel G. YOUNKIN was born in Gratiot, Oh. 11 September 1839 and died 15 September 1919. He came to Farmington, Iowa with his parents in 1848, removing to Montrose in 1864. Married Miss Lucretia CURTIS in 1866. They had four children, one dying in infancy, remains to mourn, his wife, one daughter, Mrs. W.E.FISHER and two sons, Curtis and William. Buried Montrose cemetery.

In Fresno at a local sanitarium, 29 August, John H. SMOUT, aged 70, passed away, uncle of George VANVLEET of Sanger, loving brother of Mrs. Mary VAN VLEET of Sanger, Mrs. Emma SPAIN, of Iowa.

Mr. and Mrs. George JOHNSON of Galland have a new girl.

Mr. and Mrs. Scott MILLER celebrate their 50th. Married in Luray, Missouri. Mrs. MILLER was the daughter of Ksaac N. LEWIS, one of the leading men of Clark Co. Missouri. Mr. MILLER is also a Clark Co. product.

Mr. Wm. THORNBURG, father of Mrs. Louis WAHRER, was born in In., 19 October 1834 and died at his home at Mt. Hamill, 29 September 1919 at the age of 84. He served in the Union Army during the Civil War, was a member of Co. E. 45th Iowa Vol. He married Miss Lucy PERRY in 1867 and had five children, four of whom survive: Messers Frank and Edward THORNBURG, Mrs. Otto H-----------and Mrs. Louis WAHRER. His first wife died 1893 and he again married in 1898, she died four years ago. Buried Sharon cemetery.

Helen HART was married at the home of her mother, Mrs. Henry HART, to Pearl BRANT of Eilmo, Missouri. Will live in Keokuk, Iowa.

Mr. and Mrs. Herbert MEYERS of Bettendorf, Iowa visited at the home of Miss Ruby VANAUSDALL, Mrs. MEYERS is the former Miss Margaret FORELAUFER. They were married at the bride’s home before visiting Argyle. They leave here for Muscatine, to visit the home of the groom.

Mrs. Robert L. REED died Wednesday. She will be buried from the home at 2. The casket will not be opened after 12.

More on REED. She was born 3 June 1878 here at this place. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Silas SAWYER, who have spent their lives in this community. Her husband survives as do two children; Miss Charlotte and Howard, parents, one brother, Frank SAWYER. Buried Montrose.

30 October 1919

Miss Leta ELIZA, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. L. E. DENMIRE, married Frank J. VENNING, 24 October at her parents home. Will live in Keokuk, Iowa.

Thomas DRESSER was born near Warren, Lee Co. Iowa, 22 September 1850. Married Sarah DEAN, 13 October 1872 and had six children, of whom three sons preceded their parents in death. His wife died in Montrose 13 May 1909. Leaves two sons; James E. of Donnellson, and Harry of near Keokuk, one daughter Mrs. Myrtle WARDLOW of Montrose. Also 12 grandchildren, and one brother and one sister.

13 November 1919

Mr. James F. HATTON, son of Mr. and Mrs. W.B. HATTON, died in Dr’s office on Armistice eve. He moved to Keokuk with his parents five years ago from a farm near Montrose. Served in France, returning in February. He was 25. Survived by parents, three sisters; Mrs. E.A. McKEE, Mrs. C.K.SANTO and Miss Katherine HATTON, and three brothers; Henry, Peter, and Emmet. Buried Keokuk cemetery.

20 November 1919

Mr. Henry C. GERBOTH died at his home last Monday. He was born in Saxony, Germany in 1837. Came to this country with his parents when he was six and settled in Pa. When he was 18, he came down the Oh. River and up the Mississippi. He was in the Civil War, acted as engineer on the Adam Heine which was in the service of General Grant. He married Miss Harriet PATTERSON and had three sons, two of whom, Charles and Albert, with the wife survive. Buried Montrose cemetery.

Mrs. Ransom CLINGMAN of Middletown, Iowa, died 6 December at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Frank NOGEN, New London. She was 79. Survived by C.R.CLINGMAN, Ross CLINGMAN and Mrs. D.W.COAD of Middletown and Mrs. Frank NUGEN and Mrs.George NUGEN of New London

Mrs. J.B.KEIL received word today of the death of Joe JACOBOSKIm a brother-in-law of Agnes MALLOY, which occurred in St. Louis.

Albert WEBBER died at the St. Joseph hospital Friday. Leaves wife, one child, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. George WEBBER, two brothers, and several sisters. Buried Charleston cemetery.

Sidney HOLMES and wife are parents of a boy. Near Charlseton.

19 December 1919

Mr. and Mrs. Charles LEEPER have an 11 pound boy, born 16 December.

The funeral of Mrs. John CASSIDY of Donnellson, formerly Miss Fanny LINK born and raised in Montrose was held at this place. Leaves husband, and six children, one brother and one sister. Buried Montrose.

Mrs. Emma HINES nee HORTON, was born 17 September 1873 at Montrose. She died 12 December 1919 at Keokuk, Graham hospital. Leaves husband, Henry HINES, a son Clayton MYERS, who is in the American Army in France, Mrs. Elizabeth HORTON and one sister, Mrs. Vallie CARR of Argyle. Funeral was held at Montrose cemetery.
