HISTORY OF CASCADE LODGE

I.O.O.F. OF MONTROSE

The Iowa Odd Fellow gives the following description of I.O.O.F. Lodge of this place in last weeks number along with a cut of building.

Odd Fellowship in the town of Montrose dates back to 1855, when on Feb. 1st, Montrose Lodge, No. 66 was instituted by Grand Master, M. HEISEY, assisted by the District Deputy. This Lodge flourished and grew for some time and then went down and in the early part of 1871 the remaining members asked to consolidate with Charleston Lodge, No., 89, of Charleston, a small village about eight miles West of Montrose, which was done, and for ten years they affiliated with Charleston Lodge, but it was too far away for the members living in Montrose to attend the meetings and some of the more enthusiastic members went to work to organize a lodge in town and the records show that their labors were successful, for on Feb. 1, 1881, Cascade Lodge was instituted and given their old number, 66. It seems that at this time the Sovereign Grand Lodge had caused the Rituals to be revised, making the number of degrees, three instead of five, but the work had not been put into use as yet, but through the efforts of a prominent member of the Order at Ft. Madison, a special dispensation was granted and Cascade bears the distinction of being the first lodge in the United States to receive the new work or three degrees.

At the present time J. Finley JOHNSON is the only member of the old lodge living in Montrose. He was initiated in 1863.

In 1898 Cascade Lodge built a new hall, a two story brick. The lower floor is rented for a furniture store and the upper story is a lodge room and is the home of Cascade Lodge and Tesson Rebekah Lodge, No. 93. We have very nice, comfortable quarters of which we are proud. The lodge room was furnished by the Rebekahs. Signed A member.
