15 Dec. 1893

L.H. SLONAKER, formerly of Montrose, died in his home at Ft. Madison. He leaves a wife, three children, a mother and two sisters. Buried at Montrose. He was 33.

Miss Mattie ROOD, daughter of Mr. And Mrs. ROOD of this place, was married to Oliver BELL on 2nd December 1893 at Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania.

Willard YOUNG is the possessor of a brand new baby boy.

Julia Maude, wife of Joseph CARVER, died at her home in Harrison Township on 5 December 1893. She was 27.

29 Dec. 1893

A son was born to Mr. And Mrs. J. W. REIMBOLD on 17 December 1893.

Funeral for Mrs. Elizabeth JOHNSTONE, wife of V .R. JOHNSTONE, took place at St. John’s church Sunday. (no other information)

5 January 1894

Henry HATTON died at his home, 31 December 1893 at the age of 79. Three days later his wife, Sarah E. WALKER passed away. Hr. HATTON was born in Storytown, Pennsylvania, 79 years ago. She was 77. Mr. And Mrs. HATTON moved from Pennsylvania to Tennessee in 1848, then to Jackson County, Missouri where they resided until 1852 when they moved to Cass County. They left Missouri under General EWING'’ order No. 11 in 1863 and came to Jefferson Township. In 1879 they moved to Montrose. They had eight children, four survive, Mr. T .S. HATTON and J.H. HATTON of Cass County, Missouri. W .B. HATTON of Montrose and Mrs. Isabell RICHARDS of New London, Iowa. Buried in Montrose.

Sophia VANOSDOLL died this morning. She was 30 years old. She leaves her mother, and two brothers, J .I. and Charles VANOSDOLL, and a sister, Mrs. Charles ALLEN.

Mr. and Mrs. James DICKIE celebrate their 25th anniversary.

John HARTEL died at his home in Keokuk this week.

Mrs. Henry ROGERS died at her home in Ft. Madison Wednesday. She was 27 and was married 7 years ago. She leaves a daughter, brother, sister, Frank HARMON and Emma GAUSLING both of Manestee, Minnesota.

Ex-Congressman Benton J. HALL, died at his home in Burlington, January 5th.

Miss Julia MOFFIT, aged 13, died Tuesday at her home three miles from Nauvoo.

Rev. John MARTIN died at residence of his son Mooke in Kahoka, Missouri. He was 87

Lewis BECKLEY died Wednesday at his home in Springfield, Missouri. He was formerly of Montrose and leaves his parents.

Miss Etta M. LEAVENWORTH married the Honorable Henry YOUNG, M.D. of Manson, Iowa at the residence of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. C. B. LEAVENWORTH on 17 January 1894. The LEAVENWORTHS are from Montrose.

Alfred G. LOWEN, member of the G.A.R. Post at Carthage, Illinois, died last Thursday.

Mr. and Mrs. Elmer SPENCER, a girl born last Thursday.

Joe COLE died last week at the penitentiary at Jefferson City, Missouri. 

26 January 1894

Clinton PYLE died Monday. He was born in Clinton County, Ohio in 1835.

Has been a resident of Lee County, Iowa for 17 years. He leaves a wife, one son, Edwin, two brothers: Dr. E. of Butler, Missouri and Theodore of this city, (from the Ft. Madison Democrat)

Louisa Jane HUGHES of Ft. Madison, died at the County Home. She leaves two sons, ages 11 and 4, who also reside at the County Home.

Anna Marie BERGSTROM died Saturday at Ft. Madison. She was 33 and leaves her husband, August, and three children.

Mrs. Kate BLECKSCHMIDT died Saturday at the home of her son, Charles, 5 miles West of here.

2 Feb. 1894

Miss Katie COURTNEY died yesterday at the Count Home.

Mrs. Margaret E. WOLF died at Keokuk. She was 57 and is survived by her husband and one son.

William TEMPE died Thursday and leaves a wife and four children.

9 Feb. 1894

Mrs. Cyntha WAY died Sunday at the home of her only surviving son, J.NICHOLSON in Keokuk Iowa.

Born to Mr. and Mrs. Eugene BILLARD, a girl, Sunday February 4th.

James EWING died at the residence of William FOWLER, three miles Northwest of Montrose on Monday. He was 55 and leaves one sister, Mrs. Robert HAMILTON. He was buried at the Summitville Cemetery.

R.J. TEWKSBERRY died at Lincoln Parks Sanitarium, Chicago last Friday. He was buried at Ft. Madison.

Mrs. A.E .HORNE died 4 February. She was 80 years old and a member of the M. E. Church for 65 years. She was born in New York State and married in 1883 and with her husband moved to Montrose where he died. Survived by four children, Mrs. J.H.ABSHIRE of Santa Rosa, California, Mrs. Sarah THOMPSON of Jolly, Iowa, Mrs. William SAWYER of New Salem, Kansas and W.F. HORNE of Hailey, Indiana.

Little Charles NOONAN died at Galland on February 3rd. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas W. NOONAN and was 4 years old.

16 February 1894

Dr. J.C.ARMENTROUT died at his home in Keokuk, Iowa on February 7th. He was born in Wilton, Iowa and he was 43 years old. Came to Keokuk in 1885. Survived by his wife, parents, and three sisters of Wilton, a sister of Cedar Rapids, and a brother of Letta, Iowa. A son lives with the parents in Wilton, Iowa.

Mrs. Mary A. MCGILLIS died at her home in Keokuk Sunday.

Old man HOLMES who lived alone near Vincennes, burned in his home. Buried in Meeks graveyard.

To Mr. and Mrs. Sam BAILEY, a baby girl, 12 pounds, born on 13th February.

Justin HAHN died Saturday at Nauvoo.

M.E.SMITH of Dumas, Missouri and Miss Ada May NURSE of Argyle, Iowa were married this week.

A son born to Mr. and Mrs. MYERS. He weighed 12 pounds.

John FOWLER and Lizzie FINDICE were married at the bride's home in New Boston, 21 Feb. 1894

William J. PARKWE of Nauvoo, died at his home Wednesday at the age of 75. His wife survives: did not list others.

Mr. and Mrs. William BRAYTON have a new baby.

S.H. SERENA and Miss Minnie MCVEY were married at Warren this week.

Edward S. POOLE Miss Nettie B. BEVER were married at Keokuk Wednesday.

Robert REED, son of Madison and Susan REED, died at the home of his parents, Wednesday.

He was 15, besides his parents: brothers and sisters. Only last year another member died.

Mr. and Mrs. W. H. HOPKIRK, a baby son born Wednesday.

Mr. and Mrs. F .H. GLANEY, a baby girl born Tuesday.

Harry SCOTT of Donnellson and Mary KERR were married last Wednesday.

Miss Mary . REED married Mr. F. L. BIRGOFFER at the home of the brides parents. (later paper said E.G. BURGHOFFER)

Joseph CLOUD of Jefferson Township married Miss Jennie BENNETT, Easter Sunday at Ft. Madison, Iowa

6 April 1894

To Mr. and Mrs. Charles ALLEN a baby girl born on April 1st.

Mable Irene COPELAND, 8 yr. old died at the home of her mother, Mrs. COPELAND near Nashville, Iowa. The youngest son, George, drowned last July. One sister, Stella and one son, William, survive.

13 April 1894

Mrs. David MILLHOUSE died Friday. She was born JEMIMA JOHNSON in Clinton County, Ohio, in the Spring of 1825. She married David MILLHOUSE in Miami County, Ohio, on 3 September 1846. They had 8 children, 6 survive, Mrs. C. H. DOUGLAS, and Thomas of Ottumwa, Mrs. John MCCANN, Garrett, David and LeRoy of this place. She with her husband moved from Ohio to Quincy and then to Montrose in 1848. Her husband also survives.

Killed in boiler blowup in Keokuk,Iowa, Charles JONES, Pat KEEFE, John ROWAN, and James STERRIT.

Albert Lee CONNABLE died at Hotel Keokuk.

Annie SMITH died at her home today. She was 12 years old. She was the daughter of MR. and the late Mrs. Lafever SMITH.

A baby boy born at the home of Mr. and Mrs. F .G. FISHER of Tacoma, Washington.

A little girl arrived at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Daniel TRIPP last week.

18 May 1894

J .S. DYGRAFF shot and killed his ex-wife, then shot himself. She was Annie M. MILLER, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Phillips MILLER of Johnson Street Road in Keokuk, Iowa. The shooting took place in Keokuk.

Mr. Lee WILLSON and Miss Maude HERRICK married Sunday at the home of groom’s grandmother, Mrs  WOLKITT. They will live in Montrose, Iowa.

Hazel WORSTER, infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. R.E. WORSTER of Keokuk died in Keokuk last week. Was buried in Montrose Cemetery.

Julia E. MORRISON died at her home in Montrose, May 12. She was born March 4th, 1869 near Montrose. Her father died in June 1878, leaving the mother with three small children of which Julia was the oldest. She leaves her mother, brother and sister.

Clarence F. CRAIG died at his home in Guide Rock, Nebraska on 3rd May. He was 40, and leaves a wife and three children. He was formerly of Ft. Madison. Mrs. CRAIG was Miss Maggie WINTERS of Montrose.

25 May 1894

Mrs. Margaret (CULMAN) MURPHY died 19 May in St. Louis, Missouri. Her body was brought back to Montrose for burial. She was born in Ireland in 1848, came to America with her parents when she was 7 and settled in Cleveland, Ohio. She married Lawrence MURPHY in 1865 and in 1870 came to Montrose where they made their residence until they moved to St. Louis about five years ago.

Mother of ten with husband and six children surviving. Namely, John, Charley, Ernest, Leo Mary and George all of St.Louis Missouri. She was of the Catholic faith. The body was taken to the home of Mr. and Mrs. John ALLISON.

E.L.FLEISBACH died at his home in Keokuk, last Wednesday.

Mr. and Mrs. John DEKLOE, have a little girl.

Miss Julia MORRISON died 12th of May. She was the daughter of Mrs. Ellen MORRISON.

8 June 1894

Nellie May PARKER, 5 years old, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. W. PARKER of Warsaw, died several days ago.

Mrs. Charles (Fannie ) A. WILSON died 4 June at Montrose. She was born in NE.Ohio on 5 November 1830. Mrs. WILSON then a widow was married to Charles WILSON at Sandusky, Iowa on 23 June 1881. Soon after their marriage they moved to Montrose. She leaves her husband and a daughter, Mrs. CARNES by a former marriage. Mrs. CARNES lives in Missouri.

15 June 1894

James H. MOORE and Miss Louise Ann PHILLIPS were married Sunday at the home of the officiating justice, General J. C. PARROTT on Fulton Street in Keokuk.

29 June 1894

Mrs. Mary (ALLEN) BLAIR, wife of W. H. BLAIR, died Wednesday. She was born in Montana on June of 1850 and 22 years ago married Mr. BLAIR. They had two children. Two years ago she took the mountain fever and they came to Iowa for to be treated. She was buried in the Montrose Cemetery.

6 July 1894

Married in Burlington, Iowa was Miss Bella ROSS formerly of Montrose and W. S. FARRAR of Burlinton. The event took place on 27 June.

Mrs. Flora DATIN formerly Miss Flory REINBOLD died at her home in Chicago Thursday. The remains were taken to Nauvoo for internment.

13 July 1894

Dora LORAINE, three-month-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles ALLEN, died Thursday. She was buried in Montrose Cemetery

20 July 1894

Hugh MCDONALD died at his home Wednesday. He was born on 19 January 1875. He leaves parents and four brothers. Buried in Nashville Cemetery.

Mr. and Mrs. John HEIGE have a new 8-pound baby girl born last week.

27 July 1894

Mr. Louis WEBBER of Cleveland, Ohio was in Montrose recently inquiring about the history of his mother. He says she lived here when a girl with John LAMONTT, Sr. and was married about the year of 1850 to a Mister WEBBER. Her maiden name was WIGGINS, Jane WIGGINS. She had one sister, Grissida and one brother, Thomas Gardner WIGGINS. Her father’s name was Archibald WIGGINS, who died early days in Iowa and was buried at the mounds about three miles from Keokuk.

A youth came to the home of Mr. and Mrs. George SPROTSMAN this week to keep house for them in their older days.

Mrs. Grace (Lynde) MEIGS, wife of Major Montgomery MEIGS died at her home in Keokuk Sunday. She was the only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Cornelius LYNDE of Rock Island, Illinois and was born in that city on 11 November 1858. She married Major MEIGS on 2 January 1877 and came to Keokuk in 1882. She leaves her husband and six daughters, the eldest, May is in Paris. (Gate City paper)

Married Wednesday was Miss Nellie HANCOCK and Mr. Charles PHILLIPS. They will live in Texas.

14 Sept. 1894

Honorable Conrad SCHWEER an old Lee County pioneer, died at his home in Primrose. He was 70.

21 Sept. 1894

A 9-pound baby girl joined Mr. and Mrs. W. M. SMITH last week.

28 Sept. 1894

Mrs. H. HALFMANN died at the age of 87 in Franklin, Iowa today. She was an old Iowa pioneer, having settled here in 1840.

Louis SCHUTTYZ died at the home of his parents, near Ft. Madison, Sunday. He was 21. He is buried in the Catholic Cemetery. He leaves his parents, one sister, Kate, and five brothers, John, William, Charley, Frank, and Joe.

Married Thursday was David SKINNER and Freda HAMBURGER. Both from Montrose.

Mr. and Mrs. CAMPBELL, formerly of Montrose, have a 12-pound baby boy.

5 Oct. 1894

Louis EVANS died at his home in Keokuk, yesterday.

Carrie BARBER died Friday. She was 35 and leaves three sisters, Mrs. Emma ANDREWS of Rockford, Mrs. Addie WAGNER of near Albia, Blanch and a brother, Fred and her father. Her mother died about a year ago. Ser vices held at St. Barnabas.

Mr. and Mrs. S .A. CARTER of St. Louis, Missouri have a little son.

Mrs. Hagerty of Keokuk died yesterday.

Miss Versie SWAN, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. H. W .Swan, married last evening at the home of her parents to Louis H. FISHER of Tacoma, Washington. Will live in Tacoma. (Burlington Hawkeye)

Miss Susie M. MEISTER and George WIRTZ married at the home of the bride’s parents near Summitville, Iowa. They will live on the WIRTZ homestead.

2 Nov. 1894

Gustave HEFFNER was shot to death near Viele last Sunday. He was buried in the Skinner Cemetery.

Married Sunday was Miss Martha LAMBERT and Henry MOORE at the home of the bride’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. John LAMBERT. They will live in Burlington.

A little girl arrived at the home of Mr. and Mrs. F. A. WHITNEY. 

John THEURER shot himself at his home in Keokuk

George WHEELOCK, aged about 40, who’s home was at Nauvoo, Illinois, died at St. Joseph Hospital.

Mrs. SALISBURY, the aged sister of Joseph SMITH, the Mormon Prophet, residing at Fountain Green, this county, says that the bodies of her brothers, Joseph and Hiram SMITH, lie in the family burial ground across the street from the old mansion house, on Main Street this city. She says there is where they always rested, and their dust lies there now. It had always been a mystery where the SMITH’S were buried and the about should put at ease the minds of our readers regarding the prophets burial place, as the aged lady ought to know, if anyone does the secret burial spot. The remains of Ida MAY, little daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John HAIGH, of Montrose Township were interred in Oakland Cemetery Wednesday.

John BARR and Sarah CHURCH married at the home of bride’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph CALE. Will live in Cincinnati, Iowa.

30 November 1894

Isaac VEAL and Maggie KENNEDY of Argyle married this week.
