Married Tuesday, 23 December 1890, were H.W. CARTER and Miss LULU NIGHTENGALE at the residence of bride in Sandusky

Married Wednesday at the Catholic church were Miss ELLA MCBRIDE of Viele and Mr. JAMES CASEY of Nauvoo. Accompanied by Miss ALLIE McBride, sister of the bride and FRANK CASEY, brother of the groom.Parents of bride are Mr. And Mrs. B. McBRIDE.

GEORGE STEPHENS, a former Montrose boy, was married at Burlington last week.

Mrs. R.S.PRATT of Ft. Madison, died at her home in that city. She was the mother of NORWOOD T. PRATT who is well known in Ft. Madison.

Miss CHRISTINA KRAEMER died at Nauvoo last Sunday. She was to have wed FRED BAEGNER Tuesday.

15 Jan. 1891

Mr. ROBERT KIESE of Illinois, married Miss MAGGIE DOYLE of String Prairie at the Belfare church. (Belfast?) Will make their home in Illinois.

Tom HUGH was killed by the cars in Texas, 5 January. He was the son of Mrs. Harriett HOUGH. ( note different spelling) of this place. Also leaves a brother S.W.HOUGH.

Mr. and Mrs. C.M.LOMBARD have taken a young lady boarder, she put in her appearance last Saturday and expects to remain 18 years.

Asel Allen HALL died Sunday. Aged 62 buried Tuesday. Was an elder of the Latter Days Saints church.

William FIFER married Miss Mary CRAWFORD Wednesday at the bride’s parents home.

29 Jan. 1891

Mr. William H. GILLMAN married Miss Amanda REDDEN Tuesday. Both reside in Montrose.

Mr. David SKINNER married Miss Annie NAILER tonight.

12 Feb. 1891

Mrs. Mary SHAY, wife of Patrick SHAW? Living in Jefferson Township, died Saturday at the age of 67.

Mr. John FRIDAY died at Jefferson City, Missouri, he is the sister of Mrs. William SINGER of Jefferson city. Or maybe brother may want to check the film for a correction on this.

Mr. Jim MULLIGAN died yesterday.

Major BIDAMOND died at Nauvoo yesterday.

26 Feb. 1891

Samuel E. WHARTON married Miss Annie B. REED at her home in Jefferson Township. (big article)

John SPROTSMAN’S baby died Tuesday. He was six months old.

5 Mar. 1891

The remains of Emma ABBOTT were reduced to ashes according to her own request. The ashes were sent to New York and deposited in the vault of the Safe Deposit Company.

Mary Carter WHITNEY, daughter of H.B. and Mary E. WHITNEY died 1 Mar. She was three months old. Buried in Keokuk Oakland Cemetery in a vault.

Sam WHOETON and Miss Anna REED of Veile were married at brides’s parents, Sam REED.

Mr. Fred NAILER and Laura CONLEY married at home of bride’s parents, William CONLEY (found where NAILER was spelled NAYLER)

26 Mar. 1891

George JASTER married Miss Emma BLAKESLEE. Mrs. RIDER, mother of the bride, prepared a sumptuous supper. Mr. JASTER is a farmer.

9 April 1891

Ellsworth B. CRANE married Miss S. Bella GRIMES at the home of William GRIMES. Mr. CRANE is a farmer. (big article)

7 May 1891

Nettie L. (BLAKESLEE) SPROTT age 40(1891, right date in paper) She was born 29 July 1856 in Illinois and married John SPROTT on the 21st of August 1872. She leaves husband, and three children.

Ross ALLISON died Monday at the age of 74. He is survived by four children, John, Sam, Alex, and Mrs. Myric REED. His wife died in March of 1872. He was born in Virginia and had lived here more then 40 years.

14 May 1891

Joseph GARRETT, a resident of Montrose, Ia. Died at the Soldiers Home at Marshalltown, Ia., on 9 May 1891. He was born in Lewis County, Missouri, on 22 January 1845. He spent his boyhood in Scotland and Lewis Counties, in Missouri. His occupation was farming. He moved to Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, until 1861 when at the age of 16 he voluntered for the Army. He enlisted in the Navy in 1864 and was wouunded. Was in a Norfolk, Virginia hospital. He left there, he and his mother, Mrs. C.R. CLINGMAN and a sister, came to Montrose. He was 47 years old.

Mrs. Margaret SCHERER, aged 96, died at the home of her son, Mr. Charles SCHERER in Keokuk, Iowa, on 12 May 1891. She was born in Zuesch, Germany and had resided in this country for the past 19 years. She was the mother of six children, all of whom are dead except the son with whom she resided with. Other survivers include 16 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.

 21 May 1891

Tip Best Post No. 75 found a grave of Howard MOON who died 19 October 1867. He was the son of A.A. and Aura P. MOON and had served in the 10th Ohio Calvary.

James REEVES, Sr. died at his home Tuesday. He was 61 and was born in Ohio. He leaves wife, and one son, George, and two daughters, Mrs. C.D. LEFFLER of Marysville, Missouri and Mrs. P.W. BOWEN of this place. Buried in Montrose Cemetery.

Judge Edward JOHNSTONE, formerly of Montrose, died at his home in Keokuk last Saturday.

28 March 1891

John CAMPELL of Charleston, died in Rock Island. Brought here last week. He leaves a wife and four children to mourn.

11 June 1891

Mr. John A. Petty, married Miss Alice E. DOUGLAS at the home of the bride, 10 June. He is a farmer.

18 June 1891

George DOUGLAS died at his home Friday. Born in Mahoning, Ohio on 8 May 1815. He married Miss Christi BEGGS on 7 October 1841. They had nine children, four of whom are dead. Those living: Mrs. Mary BOLEY of Ashton, Mo. William of Gem, Kansas, David of Omaha, Nebraska, George H. of LeMars, Iowa and Mrs. J.A.PETTY of this place. Came to Iowa in 1850 and settled near West Point, living there one year, came to Jefferson Township near Montrose where he lived for 13 years. He then moved to Charleston for 2 years. He then moved to Montrose.

Several of our Montrose citizens went to Keokuk today to witness the marriage of General SCOFIELD. Ceremony was held at the St. John’s Episcopal Church.

25 June 1891

W.J.PHIFER, formerly of Montrose, now of Crete and Miss Johanna BORNE of Wilber were married at the latter place last Wednesday.

Cacie BISHOP died Monday at the age of 10 years old. She lived 3 miles North of town on the Ft.Madison road.

9 July 1891

J.W.JASTER died Wednesday. Funeral will be at the home Friday.

Lee LINK and Miss Theresa ROBINSON were married last Sunday.

Mrs. Harriett CRANDALL, died 17 July. She was born 30 August 1824 in Yorkshire, England and with her parents, sister and brother-in -law came to Pittsburg, Pennsylvania in 1840. Came to Montrose in 1842. She was one of the three oldest settlers of this town. Her maiden name was ELLIS. In 1852, she was married to C.J.BRADDOCK, had four daughter and one son, four of whom are still living, Mrs. Edward SMITH of Ft. Madison, Mrs. K.E.NETHEWAY and Joseph BRADDOCK of Custer, South Dakota and Ida BRADDOCK of Montrose. Several years after Mr. BRADDOCKS death, she married Mr. A. CRANDALL, our present mayor

6 August 1891

Mrs. Rebecca S. WILSON died Monday at the home of her daughter, Mrs. J.B.KIEL. She was born in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania on 6 November 1808. Her maiden name was WALKER. She married John WILSON on 17 March 1825. They moved to Iowa 1847. They settled in Jefferson Township in September. Her husband died two years after their arrival in Iowa. The family then came to Montrose about 1859. Seven of eight children survive: Mrs. C.V.MEYERS, Mrs. H.J.E.VANOSDOLL, Walker WILSON, Mrs. J.N.BALTON, H.P.WILSON, and Mrs. L.E.PECK, Mrs. J.B. KIEL< all of them reside in this city.

27 August 1891

Married at the residence of William SKINNER on Thursday were Mark O. WILSON of Peoria, Illinois and Miss Isabel SKINNER.

Rev. W. M. COONEY married Miss Florence BRICKER at Fort Madison on Thursday.

17 September 1891

Louis WAHRER of Charleston, married Miss Cora THORNBURG at the bride’s parents home in Mt. Hamill. Groom is a salesman for Crouse and Son Nursery of Nevada, Missouri.

24 September 1891

Robert MITCHELL died at his home in Farmington on Wednesday of last week. He was buried at Montrose. He leaves a wife and three small children.

1 Oct. 1891

Phillip BUSBY, formerly of Montrose, died at Salt Lake City, Utah, Sunday on 20 September. He was 37 and leaves a wife, and daughter, Alice, who lives with her grandmother, Mrs. James CODE at Keokuk, one brother, and two sisters, Mrs. Lige MOORE of Montrose and Mrs. Jane HATHAWAY of Ft. Madison.

Mr. C. MAXWELL of Keokuk and Miss Persis COCHARNE of Columbus, Indiana, were married in Columbus. They will live in Keokuk.

8 October 1891

Charles FARRIS, 11 years old, son of Charles H. and Edith FARRIS, died at his home.

C.H. LEEPS died Saturday at Sandusky.

22 Oct. 1891

Mr. And Mrs. L. ANDREWS of Sandusky, had a son last week.

The body found near Nashville on September 27th is supposed to have been the body of one STADLEY, the cook on the Libby Conger.

29 October 1891

Chester REEVES, 10-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. James REEVES, died on 22 October.

Colonel James M. SHELLEY, 79, died at his home in Keokuk.

Oliver J. COULTER, died yesterday. He was born on 13 November 1853 at Youngstown, Niagra County, New York. Came to Montrose with his parents about 1857. He is survived by his mother, four sisters and one brother, Mrs. E. BRADNEY of Columbus, Kansas, Mrs. J.R. AMIDON, George, Hattie E. and Annie, all of this place. His father died 17 years ago.

12 November 1891

Mrs. Jane KNOX died Thursday. She was the daughter of John GLASSFORD. She married John KNOX of Burlington about a year ago. She leaves a husband, father, mother, two brothers, and a little sister.

E.B.CARTER died in Hamilton, Illinois on 2 November. He was formerly of Montrose and was 30 years old. He leaves a wife and two small children. He married Miss Lizzie GIVINS only daughter of Ambrose GIVINS and a granddaughter of Mrs. Mary RICHARDSON. The marriage took place about 8 years ago.

Mrs. James MYERS of Texas, formerly Miss Dottie HICKMAN of this place is now entitled to the dignified title of “MaMa”.

19 November 1891

Miss Alice GLASSFORD, daughter of Mr. And Mrs. George GLASSFORD married Charles McELHANY on 16 November at the home of her parents. He is from Chicago.
