Memorial stones are common and in some cases you find the same person with several stones about, relatives wanted to honor them in several places at times. The information as to their burials comes from a roster of Iowa soldiers, I know for a fact that at Andersonville, at least when it comes to those who were buried as prisoners only one Iowan was exhumed and brought home. that is one in several hundred from Iowa, so bringing bodies home, although possible, was expensive and often it didn't happen. Hence, a memorial stone sufficed.
